Sherrod Smith Would Be Greater Today
Thus xar this season the Atlanta Braves have not lost a home
series at the Atlanta Stadium. . . On a recent 200-mile trip to Tenn
essee we saw cars from 20 different states on the highway. Many
of these, no doubt, were headed for Atlanta and the Braves baseball
park . . . Hobson Jones of Covington, who spent many years in Detroit
and saw a lot of great baseball players in action, says that “If
Sherrod Smith were living today he would be the greatest pitcher
in baseball.” Smith pitched in both the National (Brooklyn) and
American (Cleveland) leagues.
Tall Pitcher More Vulnerable
In the new National League setup (East-West Div.), the East
erners downed the West teams five of six games in their initial
series. . .Tony Kubek, a baseball announcer on the Game of The
Day says that it is easier to steal a base on a tall pitcher rather
than a small man. The reason, he says, the taller man does not
move as well. . .Jerry West of the Lakers lias been awarded Sport
Magazine’s Dodge Charger R/T as the Outstanding Player in The
NBA Playoffs.
6 Former Crackers Now Managing
Tim Christian’s end coach with the pro Philadelphia Eagles will
probably be Charley Gauer, who played his college football at
Colgate. Gauer was a player with the champ 1960 Eagles. . .Add to
edibles now on the market! “Choo Choo Chicken” now being served
on the Stone Mountain Park RR train. . . Six former Atlanta Crakers
are now managing in the Major Leagues.
High School Coach Won 924 Games
Perry’s Eric Staples had his day there on May 2. He coached
at Perry High for 36 years and his teams won 924 games and lost
198. That’s a per-year average of 25.7 wins and 5.5 losses. . .
The season schedule of some college teams in baseball takes in
about 40 games. Florida State, for one, plays a 40-odd game
slate. . .Rico Carty is one of 16 children. . .If you were in a frame
of mind to buy Majestic Prince, the 1969 Kentucky Derby winner,
what would be the price? It’s two million dollars.
8 Months Baseball Season In 1869
Only four third-basemen have been named to the Baseball Hall
of Fame at Cooperstown, N. Y.: Frank Baker, Jimmy Collins, John
J. McGraw, Harold (Pie) Traynor. This is the least number of
diamond stars from one position in The Hall . . . "The reason why

Barlick Has 25 Years Jts Baseball Ump
The longevity of many baseball players is often spot-lighted in
the news, but seldom is the umpire publicized. The ump with the
longest skein of years in the majors is Al Barlick of the National
League. He lias 25 years. . .Bob Polk, a former assistant basket
ball coach at Georgia Tech, has been named the mentor of St. Louis
University. Polk coached at Vanderbilt for 14 years and really
brought the hardwood game to prominence there.
Sporty or not, these are catchy brand names now coming on the
market: “Choo Choo Chicken” at Stone Mountain park on the train
that encircles the Mountain; and soon to be located in Atlanta “Stupid
Cupid,” fast food chain to feature Danish style sandwiches. . .
Fletcher Hill of Washington Street has recently received two pen
cils from Germany. Bill Crawford, Jr., of Covington, who is now
stationed in Germany with the Armed Services, sent them to Mr.
Hill. An odd thing about the pencils: they have no erasers on the
end.
Coach Ken Rosemond’s Georgia basketball team, with every man
back from a year ago, will meet the University of Illinois, Davidson,
and engage in tiie Quaker City Tournament this next basketball
season. Two games with LSU are also on the card ...If you are a
deep-sea or small lake fisherman you will want to read the recently
published edition of Charles F. Chapman’s “Piloting Seamanship
and Samll Boat Handling” book. It is available from The Yachts
man’s Magazine, 959 Eighth Avenue, New York N. Y. 10019 at $7.95
postpaid.
Cornelius (Rip) Collins, quite a semi-pro baseball player him

this year! Rip says that the Braves do not have adequate relief
pitching. . . Each major league baseball team will pick an all

A PORTABLE X-RAY SPECTROMETER that uses radioisoto
pes to detect gold, silver or other elements in minerals has been
developed by the Atomic Energy Commission. The device can also
analyze alloys and solutions for elemental content. The spectro
meter, which weighs less than 15 pounds, employs X-rays produced
directly or indirectly by radioisotopes emitting low-energy radiation.
(No doubt. Gemologist M. O. Campbell of Mansfield will have one
of these machines before long.)

Fishermen
Precautions
Fishing season is under way
and the American National Red
Cross warns that serious ac
cidents may result unless pre
cautions are taken to avoid the
many hazards of the sport.
Red Cross encourages part
icipation in first aid and water
safety training in order to re
duce fishing accidents.
Os concern to the early-sea
son angler is prolonged immer
sion in cold water. Hie cold
water reduces body tempera
ture making it difficult to swim;
therefore the fisherman should
get out of the water as soon as
possible. It is usually safer
to stay with the boat rather
than attempt a long, uncertain
swim to shore.
Further suggestions for the
fisherman include:
—Learn how to swim, know
basic first aid, carry first aid
kit in boat.
—Check weather forecast and
do not go out if severe weather
threatens.
—Carry needlenose pliers,
wire cutters and a pocket knife
to remove hooks; however,
if snagged very deeply, go to
nearest doctor or hospital and
do not try to remove.
—Watch when casting that
others are not in danger such as
swimmers, skiers, skin and sc
uba divers and other fishermen.
—ls fishing alone, leave word
where you will be and when you
will return.
—ln snake-infested areas
wear high boots watching where
you sit and stand and what you
touch.
—Never stand in boat while
fishing and always provide life
preservers for every pass
enger.
For more information about
Red Cross first aid and water
safety course, consult your local
Red Cross chapter.
The adult life of the blue crab
is relatively short, say marine
biologists at Marineland of Flo

creature’s 36 month life expec
tancy is lived at full maturity.
