Seminar On
Poultry Waste
Set May 28
New methods in handling and
disposing of poultry waste will be
discussed in a poultry waste man
agement seminar scheduled for
Wednesday, May 28, on the Uni
versity of Georgia campus.
Registration will begin at
8:30 a.m. in the auditorium of
the Agricultural Engineering
building.
Dr. Henry W. Garren, dean and
coordinator of the College of Ag
riculture, will make the keynote
address at 9 o’clock. His subject
will be “The Problem of Poultry
Pollution.”
This will be followed by dis
cussions of “Odor Pollution” and
“Water Pollution” by Dr. Paul
Taiganides, agricultural engin
eering department, Ohio State
University, Columbus, and Dr.
David W. Hill, Southeast Water
Laboratory, Athens, respecti
vely.
P. J. Bergeaux, Extension Ser
vice agronomist - soils and fert
ilizer, will appear on the program
at 11:15 a.m. He will discuss
“Use of Poultry Manure in Crop
production.”
After lunch at 12 noon, the
sessions will resume at 1:30 p.m.
The afternoon program will fea
ture three presentations, includ
ing “Design and Operation of
Waste Lagoons,” “Solving Pro
cessing Plant Waste Problems,”
and “Management Techniques in
Handling Waste.” Speakers for
these subjects are Dr. Ralph E.
Smith, agricultural engineering
department, University of Geor
gia; Dr. R. Lewis Wesley, Ex
tension poultry science depart
ment, Virginia Polytechnic In
stitute, Blacksburg, and Wood R.
Jenkins, Division of Agri
cultural Science, technology and
management, Federal Exten
sion Service, Washington, D. C.
The waste seminar is being
sponsored by the poultry science
departments of the Extension Ser
vice and the College of Agri
culture. J. Henry Massey of the
Extension Service said this is
the first such program ever held
in the state.
Charles R. O’Kelley, assistant
director of Extension, will
preside during the morning ses
sion, Ben H. Carter, vice presi
dent and treasurer, J. D. Jewell,
Inc., Gainesville, during the
afternoon.

Harristown
Plans Cleanup
The community of Harristown
has formed a neighborhood club
the purpose of which is to help
better the community by working
together. Hie officers are: Pres
ident, Mrs. Annie Baldwin; Vice-
President, Mrs. Idella Gaither;
Secretary, Miss Harriett Jordon;
Assistant Secretary, Miss Kathe
rine Kelly; Treasurer, Mrs. May
belle Aiken; and Publicity Chair
man, Miss Sula Crutchfield.
The club is joining with other
neighborhood clubs in Newton Co
unty to make its first project a
clean-up campaign. The cam
paign is now underway and will
continue through May 17th. Hie
committee in charge is: Miss
Annie Morris, Mrs. Roby, Miss
Katherine Kelly, Mr. Freeman,
and Miss Harriett Jordon. These
members are asking for one hun
dred percent cooperation from
everyone in Harristown to make
this project a big success and to
make Harristown one of the most
attractive neighborhoods
