An Unbelievable Finish!
Porterdale Junior High Coach Billy Crowell told of one of his
team’s “greatest victory during my coaching career.’’ It came
when we were playing Ficquett School in the annual county tourney.
My team was nine points behind and 17 seconds to play. I told Gar
land Curtis (now a Porterdale Policeman), if the team ever put on
a press, now is the time. My boys came through and we won the
game by four points.”. . .One of the prime attractions during the
1969 National American Legion Convention in Atlanta will be the
exhibition football game between the Falcons and the Washington
Redskins on August 23.
Bradley May Be North A 11-Star Coach
There are 290 living men who have received the Congressional
Medal of Honor . . . Coach Ronald Bradley of NCHS is in the runn
ing for the position of coach of the North Georgia High School All-
Star team in the August 7th game in Macon. The announcement
will be made later this week. Bradley has coached in the cage game
three times, one as headman and two as assistant He has been a
winner on all three occasions.
Aaron Nearing More Records
Henry Aaron is setting two National League records in bases
loaded homers in a career 12 (he now has 11), and doubles with
502. . .One of my neighbors (R. A. Maddox) recently game me a
copy of a story on Babe Ruth’s homer in the 1932 World Series
in which he pointed to the Centerfield bleachers and hit the ball into
the stands. What I didn’t know before, was that Ruth also hit a home
his first time up in that game against the Chicago Cubs.
Carney Leaving Covington After 20 Years
L. G. Carney, coach of boys and girls athletics at Ficquett
School in Covington since 1950, is taking a coaching position in
either Clarke or Oglethorpe county next season. Carney came to
Covington the same year that the late George Hutchinson started
with the local Covington elementary school... If Chicago and Boston
of the American League were to swap players what would be the
color of their sox? The sox would be white (Chi) and red (Boston).
Four Yankee Numbers Retired
Joe Torre of the Cardinals (a former Brave) weighed 240 pounds
when he was 16 years old in Brooklyn. . .The May 26 Atlanta-St.
Louis game was played at the Stadium in one hour and 39 minutes.
Most games take over two hours. . .Four New York Yankees have
had their numbers retired: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio
and Mickey Mantle. The numerals are 3-4-5 and 7. Mantle wore
No. 7.
It now comes to light that Johnny Longdon, trainer of Majestic
Prince, has been a friend of the horse s owner for many years
and that he (Longdon) once loaned the Canadian a large sum of
money. Yes, those jockeys have money sticking out of their
pockets They tell this on a sports parachutist who floated to
earth on 'the median strip of an Interstate Highway: the man was
arrested for “illegal entry to a controlled access highway”.. .
Assistant Ram Football Coach Perry Haymore will be the manager
of the Kiwanis Club’s swimming pool this summer.

Lou Thesz To
Wrestle Here
Saturday Night
El Mongol really gave Paul
Demarco a hard time in the Satur
day night wrestling match in Cov
ington.
Paul is a hard fighter. He
doesn’t give up too easily. El
Mongol was the winner of the
first faH with a double slop.
Paul tried to take advantage of
El Mongol in the second fall
when he stepped into the ring
before the sound of the bell.
The referee tried to stop Paul,
but with no success. The referee
disqualified Paul.
There was plenty of action
in the semi-final Saturday. The
Kentuckians defeated Tony Nero
and Scandor Akban in two straight
falls.
In the first match Timothy Geo

defeat Tom Bradley.
The Great Lou Thesz will join
