Jan Deas, an Honor student
from Covington, received the
freshman Chemistry award and
recognition for excellence in
French.
Other recipients of the French
awards include Sandra Stapp,
Rutledge, Diana Rineer, Cairo;
and Becky Beckman, Hemingway,
South Carolina.
The History and social science
award given for special achieve
ment to a student majoring in this
field went to Polly Paul, a soph
omore from Marathon Shores,
Florida.
Joe Wetherington, a Merit stu
dent from Tifton, and Blane Cran
dall, Honor student from Eau
Gallle, Florida, were the reci
pients of the award for Physics
presented by Dr. J. F. Landt,
chairman of the Natural science
Division.
Awards for achievement in Sp
anish were presented to Ada Rip
pberger, Quebec, Canada; Howie
Stiller, Atlanta; Joseph Har
ner, Anniston, Alabama; and El
aine Tomlinson, Stockton.
THose receiving awards for
excellence In German were Hugh
Randall, Cedartown; Tony Gib
son, Oscilla; Errin Erb, Atlanta;
and Mike Haney, Decatur.
For academic and leadership
excellence in the Air Force Of
ficer Training Course, William
B. Nipper, Jr., Greensboro, re
ceived* the Professor of Aero-
space Studies Award; Alfred P.
Robertson, Gainesville, the Ful
ton County 40 and 8 (American
Legion) Award, and Julian C. Hut
chins, Greensboro, the Sons of
the American Revolution Award.
Julian also attained recognition
for maintaining the highest over
all grade average in AFROTC
in the Emory University system.

Memphis, Tenn., and Miss Judith
Greer, instructor of physical ed
ucation were the recipients of

Spokesman Awards are given to
the two sophomore students, one
male and one female, who have
maintained at least a “C” av
erage and who have contributed
much in service to the campus
community without previous re
cognition. The award is also
made to the faculty member who
has made a significant contribut
ion in service to the students of
Oxford. The Spokesman staff
also presented a special award
to departing faculty advisor, Mr.
Neil Penn.

was awarded to Joe Siry, editor
in-chief of The Spokesman, the
school newspaper.

bah was named to the Athletic
Hall of Fame, and Intramural
Athletic Cups were presented
to Bonnell Dorm and “B” Com
pany by Dr. Carlos Meyer, head
of the department of physical
education.
Ilie Memory, the college year
book, was dedicated by Fanita
Thursday, June 5, 1969
Smithwick, editor, to Mr. Ted
David, instructor in history and
social science, for his "genuine
faith in young people" and his
contribution to and support of
new student legislation.
Danny Preston, Anniston, Ala
bama, and Betty Mozley, Marie
tta, were announced as Mr. and
Miss Memory.
To climax the day, a Honors
banquet was held in the school
cafeteria.
Tech’s New Head
ATLANTA (GPS)-Georgia Tech
has reached into its own faculty
ranks for a man to head the 84-
year-old Atlanta engineering in
stitute.
He is Dr. Arthur G. Hansen,
44-year-old dean of the College
of Engineering, who will suc
ceed Dr. Edwin D. Harrison as
president on August 1.
Dr. Harrison announced his re
signation last summer and has
been on leave of absence since
March. Dr. Hansen came to Tech
in 1966.
