Christian Ashran Service Held At Oxford College

DR. CLAUDE H. THOMPSON, Dr. E. Stanley Jones and Dean Bond Fleming of Oxford College are shown
at the Georgia Christian Ashram services held at Oxford College this past week. Dr. Jones, famous
missionary, evangelist and author, brought the Ashram program to this country from India, and here
has the meaning of “A Retreat”.

Mary Mallard Circle WMS Held
July Meeting A t Church
The July meeting of the Mary
Mallard WMS was held at the
First Baptist Church. Upon arri
val of the guests they were greet
ed by the hostess Mrs. Belmont
Dennis, who served a refreshing
iced drink, with crisp -cheese
wafers and delicious mints. The
table had as its centerpiece a
lovely arrangement of tiny pink
and blue hydrangeas.
The meeting was called to order
by Mrs. Richard George, Presi
dent, and various reports given.
The Chairman of Community Mis
sions reported a large box of
beautiful clothes for children, as
well as several pairs of shoes.
Miss Gray brought a pretty “Get
Standard’s and Harry Melton’s.

homecoming at Alcovy Methodist
Church on Sunday. The Rev.
Charles Thomas was the speak
er. He formerly was the pas
tor of Alcovy and Salem and is
now pastor of Grant Park in At
lanta.

Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Kemp left
Saturday for Baton Rouge, Louisi
ana. Misses Martha and Laura
Kemp went by plane on Wednes
day to attend the graduation exer
cises of their daughter and sis
ter Miss Dana Kemp. She has
been attending the University of
Louisiana for the past term. She
will receive her master’s degree.

sident turned the meeting over
to Miss Lois Gray. The subject
was “Not In A Covered Wagon”.
The program introduced modern
pioneers as people “Pacema
kers” and “Partners in Chris
tian Work.” Miss Gray present
ed this program in a beautiful
and challenging manner.
The meeting was closed with a
chain prayer by the circle mem
bers.
Moore all enjoyed the home
coming at Lovejoy Methodist Ch
urch on Sunday.

his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.

ville) left for Jacksonville, Flo
rida Saturday to meet her hus
band whose ship was due in July
29th. They will live in Jackson
ville until he is discharged in
December.

The Covington Rotary Club he
ard Earl L. Tyre, Division En
gineer of the State Iflghway Dep -
artment, speak on the State High
way Department, its function and
the development for the future.
Mr. Tyre pointed out that there
is only one toll road in the St
ate of Georgia. The cost of
maintaining and building new
roads Is rising, yet tax rates
and funds are not keeping up with
the increases.
In Newton County alone the St
ate Highway Department has 528.5
miles of roads to maintain. The
payroll for maintainance employ
ees alone In Newton County is al
most $42,000 a year. In addition
to that there Is an engineering
payroll of $101,316 annually.
