Yarbrough Seeks Dixie 500
Sunday At Atlanta Raceway
In 1960, a 21-year-old rookie
driver named Lee Roy Yar
brough finished 33rd in the At
lanta 500 and picked up a
check—the only one he would
get all year—for $225. What
alt difference a decade makes.
Now, nearly 10 years later,
the veteran 30-year old Yar
brough returns to Atlanta for
the 10th annual Dixie 500,
Aug. 3rd with a chance to be
come the biggest single season
money winner in the history of
stock car racing.
Through the first half of the
1969 NASCAR Grand National
season, Yarbrough has earned
more than $120,000 in winning
four superspeedway events and

similar names. Together, they
have won four of the last five

4 Football
Doubleheaders
Set In Atlanta
ATLANTA (Special) — There
are a lot of misconceptions about
the world of sports.
One Is that college athletics
are being squeezed by the pros,
that professional football, for
instance, is chopping into at
tendance at college games.
Well, it isn’t true In all cases.
Georgia Tech and the National
Football League’s Atlanta Fal
cons will play in four “double
headers” this fall. That is to
say, on four separate weekends,
the Yellow Jackets will play at
Grant Field on Saturday while
the following Sunday the Falcons
will tackle an NFL foe in Atlanta
Stadium.
And, neither team is sorry
about it. Contrary to what many
persons believe, the arrangement
is mutually beneficial. The Tech
ticket office constantly receives
inquiries about when the Jackets
and Falcons play on consecutive
days at home.
Many Chicago area fans
already have expressed Interest
in the Nov. 13-14 weekend when
Tech meets Notre Dame in a nat
ionally televised game at 9:30
p. m. Saturday and the Falcons
play the Bears Sunday afternoon.
That’s the last of the four
twlnbllls. Much Interest also
is being shown in the other three
big weekends: Tech vs. Southern
Methodist in the Jackets’ sea
son opener Sept. 20 and the Fal
cons vs. San Francisco Sept.

Buddy Baker, Alß’s fastest qu
slifier for the past two years.
Baker also set the track record
of 158.730 miles per hour dur
ing qualifying for the Atlanta
500 last March.
Paul Goldsmith and Bobby
Allison will help Baker fortify
the Dodge team which is still
looking for its first superspeed
way win this season.
Others who could upset Yar
brough’s pay schedule Include
defending NASCAR Champion
David Pearson, who hasn’t won
at Atlanta since his 1961 rookie
year, and perennial favorite
Richard Petty, who has drawn
blanks in 500 milers since the
January Riverside 500—Petty’s
first race in a Ford. Pearson
also drives a Ford.
Atlanta’s new General Mana
ger, Don Finke, announced that
there has been a complete face
lifting of the Raceway since the
Atlanta 500. The work includes
installation of 20,000 chairback
seats, two new infield rest
rooms and leveling of the spec
tator Infield area. Finke has
also initiated new traffic con
trol procedure, which will pro
vide race fans smoother and
faster access to and from the
track
Qualifying for the Dixie 500
begins Wednesday, July 30, and
concludes Saturday, August 2,
with a 20 lap qualifying race
for the final 10 positions in
the 40-car starting field. Race
time Aug. 3rd is 1 p.m.

World Series Tickets Delayed
Dr Herman Jones of the Georgia Crime Lab has retired. He is
one of Auburn’s greatest boosters in this area. Dr. Jones was in
Covington when Tim Christian signed with the Tigers .Lee May,
the Cincy fir st-baseman, did not play winter baseball lastyear.
Maybe that helped him in his current great hitting season with the
Reds. .Local people asking about World Series tickets will have
to wait until about a week before the season is over before their
application can be accepted. Teams in contention at that time will
announce the ticket procedure.
Robert Trippe On HR For The Money
Milo Hamilton, the Braves Voice, has answered his critics who
say “Your job is to call the balls and strikes. If it werent for
the extra reporting of the game and sidelights, Mile would not be the
fine broadcaster that he is today. . .Robert Trippe of Covington was
one of the participants on "Home Rim For The Money on July
17th. Felix Millan batted for him and failed to hit a homer.
Randalls Visit Halls Os Fame
Six Newton County coon hunters are going to Flora, niinois,
for the Red Bone Coon Hunt, a National sporting event. The local
men leaving for Illinois today (Thursday) are: Charles Mason, Ted
Bailey, Sammy Maddox, Johnny Cowan, Jack Laster, and Max M
Culloueh .Tommy Aaron, the golfer, will be remembered as a
quarterback for the Gainesville Red Elephants in 1954. His team
downed the Rams here in ’54 by a 34-7 score on Legion Field. . .
The Hoke Randalls of Covington have returned home from a trip
up North. They visited the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown,
N. Y. and the professional HaH of Fame at Canton, Ohio.
Favors College Football Rules Status Quo
“Sport Magazine” says that Joe Namath quit school at Alabama
three times during his freshman year. Each time, however he re
turned. . .Jesse Outlar stated that Willie Mays fast-fading
Eddie Mathews’ familiar No. 41 has been retired by the Atlanta
Braves. Mathews played for the Braves in three cities: Boston,
Milwaukee and Atlanta. . .Dave Nelson, NCAA Rules Committee
secretary favors a 5-year moratorium on college rules changes.
He says that fans will become more familiar with the rules during
that time.
Lefty Loyd Now A Pennsylvanian
Gibson Loyd, one of two fine lefthanded pitchers of West Georgia
College a few years ago (the other was Lee Campbell) now lives in
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He is expected home to visit his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Boyce Loyd, Route 2, Covington, this week ... Here’s
a puzzler to come out of that All-Time baseball poll last week:
Rogers Hornsby was named the All-Time second baseman in the
major leagues, and on the Braves’ All-Time the second sacker is
Red Schoendienst . . . Roscoe Tanner, one of the best young tennis
players in the South, has signed an "Achievement Grant” with
Stanford University, Palo Alto, Calif. Turner is from Chattanooga,
Tenn. This is the only tennis grant Stanford gives.
Rocky Graziano’s TV commercials earn him about $250,000
per year ... We recently saw a sign on the highway advertising
the “Garbage Can Case” . . . And, here’s a catchy definition:
"Gathering of a dog pack is a "Bow Wow, Pow Wow.”
Bradley Calls North All-Stars Together
Newton Ram Coach Ronald
Bradley has called his North Geo

Hawks’Gregor Signs Contract
The newest member of the At
lanta Hawks veterans corps, Gary
Gregor, has signed his contract
for the 1969-70 season, club offi
cials announced Monday.
Gregor, 6-7 and 235 pounds,
came to the Hawks this year in a
trade with Phoenix for Paul Si
las.
The former University of South
Carolina star was the No. 1 draft
choice of Phoenix In 1967 and was
named to the NBA All-Rookie
team. He scored 785 points last
season for a 9.8 average.
A college teammate of the
Hawks’ Skip Harlicka, Gregor
feels he’s made the adjustment
from college to professional bas
ketball.
"It was a break for me when
I was drafted by an expansion
team last year,” Gregor said.
“I got a chance to get in a lot
of playing time. If I’d gone with
an estaonsned club, this might not
have been so.”
With Phoenix, Gregor hit on 400
of 963 field goal attempts for a
,415 percnetage. He pulled down
711 rebounds. His best game
came against San Diego last Dec.
28 when he scored 28 points and
grabbed 19 rebounds.
“I feel I learned quite a bit
In my first year,” Gregor said.
"The trade to Atlanta came as a
surprise. Em going to have to
work much harder here to make
this club. They’re all season-
Hank Aaron of Atlanta had 534
lifetime home runs at the All-
Star Game break, tying him with
Jimmy Foxx for fourth place
In Baseball history. Aaron also

Phil Niekro and Bob Didier
, . .they’ve found a pitching
partnership that had the
Braves in first place thisyear
at the All-Star break. Now
Niekro, 30-year-old veteran,
and Didier, 20-year-old rook

At the end of the season, if
the Braves’ success contin

in store for that pair.
With 15 victories through
July 20, Phil led the major
leagues and needed just five
more to fulfill a lifetime goal
in Baseball, a 20-victory sea
son.
The Braves, however, would
like to see Phil become the
National League winner of the
Cy Young award, naming him
the league’s best pitcher.
Os course, the end of the
season is still a long way off.
For Didier, the writers who

Bob has bolstered Niekro’s
confidence by successfully
catching the knuckler. And
young Didier has really im
pressed the Braves with his
improvement at the plate.
Through the first 20 days of
July he was batting .380 for
the month!
Bob’s importance to Nie
kro was apparent at the All-
Star Game. Catching Niekro
in the ninth inning, Randy
Hundley of the Chicago Cubs
failed to hold on to two of
Phil’s knuckleball pitches.
Let’s look at some facets
of Niekro’s first 24 games
of the ’69 season;
— In all but five of them,
Didier went all the way be
hind the plate;
— Three of them were
shutouts;
— Sixteen were complete
games;
— He won 15, lost 7;
— The average time for his
out of the ring and the referee
counted them out.
In the semi-final the midget
team of Little Bruiser and Little
Crusher were beaten by Cowboy
Lang and Bob Johnson.
In the first match on the card,
Bill Dromo and The professional
who was substituting for Coach
John Heath, wrestled to a draw.
For this coming week, The Pro

his partner against The As

Aaron Now In
Third HR Spot
The Braves’ Henry Aaron is
now in third place in the all
time home run race in the Major

Here is the scorecard:
Babe Ruth 714
Willie Mays 596
Henry Aaron 536
Mickey Mantle 535
Jimmy Foxx 534
Ted Williams 531
