A week later, after traveling
by boat, helicopters, and 9C41
Air Force jets, with a stop in
Yukoma Air Force Base, Japan,
these young Americans were be -
ing elaborately welcomed and en
tertained in Seattle, Washington.
There was a dinner with speech
es and VlP’s; the mayor, a Me
dal of HOnor winner, and other
dignitaries. New clothing was
Issued at Fort Lewis for the gi
gantic parade through downtown
Seattle on July 10.
Eight months and sixteen days
after this young soldier began
his tour of duty at the Dong
Tam Base, he was at home with
his family.
"It’s really good to be home”,
he emphasized over and over.
He and wife, Brenda, have re-
cently moved into their apartment
near Covington after a brief visit
with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Seaborn Farmer in Porterdale.
A little delving into the re
cords revealed that Mr. Farmer’s
modesty had veiled some of his
commendations, which included
3 ACM awards for achievement,
service, and valor, 1 Bronze
Star for "volunteering for TCP
and Straggler Control Points in an
area of exploding ordnance and
flying shrapnel”, and a Good Con
duct Medal.
There were letters from Gene
ral Creighton W. Abrams, Com
mander of the united states Mili
tary Assistance command, Viet
nam, and Captain Phillip H. King,
MPC Commanding Officer of the
9th PC CO. of the 9th Infantry
Division. A third from Provost
Marshall LTC, Raymond W.
Wood, explains some of Mr. Far
mer’s specific accomplishments
and contributions:
••Upon completion of your as
signment with the 9th Military
Police Company, I wish to com
mend you on your truly outstand
ing performance ofduty as NCOIC
of gate security at Don Tam Base,
Republic of Vietnam.
‘•Your accomplishments while
charged with this highly sensi
tive mission, demonstrated a keen
sense of responsibility and a high
degree of initiative and imagi
nation. Hie security of Dong Tam,
to a great extent, depended on
the thoroughness with which you
performed your mission. Over
3,500 civilian employees and hun
dreds of military and civilian ve
hicles entered and departed th
rough this gate daily. Your
constant search for ways to im
prove the pass system and the
gate facilities resulted in a tho
rough and rapid system of pro
cessing these employees, while at
the same time, insured maximum
security for the Installation.
THE COVINGTON NEWS
"In view of the critical tacti
cal situation during your tenure,
engineer support, of necessity,
had to be diverted elsewhere.
Through your supervision and
personal labor, a well construct
ed and efficiently organized gate
became a reality. Tbe organiza
tion of the search lanes, pass
exchange windows, and other nec
essary facilities is a direct re
flection of your planning ability,
engineering expertise, and re
sourcefulness. Without fear of
exaggeration, your efforts have in
a large measure contributed to
the successful accomplishment of
the military police mission at
Dong Tam Base. Congratula
tions on a job very well done.”
The unemployment rate for
teenagers is approximately 11.6
percent, m> re than three times
the national average.
