H •> here that we find the
legend of Isaac Fubanks, one of
the stalwarts of Christian faith,
n ho mot the challenge tn the era
that tries! men’s souls. For
nearly two years, "Ihcle Isaac”
Eubank* as he was known plodd
ed his lone way about five or
six miles to Salem Baptist Ch
urch, his spiritual homo.
undaimted by the heavy silence
■a Meh enshrouded the empty pews
and pulpit, Uhcle Isaac went into
the presence of his lord. He
sang the old familiar hymns and
read the holy word of God. In
short, he held a one man ser
vice.
Eventually with the aid of neigh
bors who were spurred into ac
tion and Dr. J. M. Britton, then
pastor of Covington Baptist Ch
urch, the church was organized
with 42 members. Among them
were Mr. and Mrs. T. N. Skel
ton whose son, Rev. Loyal Skel
ton who made his profession of
faith at Salem as well as his
decision to go Into the ministry.
He preached his first sermon
there and was Salem’s pastor
from 1926 to 1948. Rev. Skelton
who is now getting along in years
is now retired but still comes
back to Salem whenever his health
permits and always attends
Homecoming.
Uncle Isaac Eubanks was the
grandfather of Miss Susie Eu
banks, Salem member, Sunday
School teacher, missionary and
was affiliated with the Georgia
Baptist Sunday School Board in
Atlanta until her death in 1958.
When the Sunday School had
gone Into a decline several years
back Mrs. Evelyn White Costley
and Mrs. ma White Sheppard
took a census of the surround
ing area and visited and enlisted
every prospective member and as
a result the Sunday School was
reactivated with a membership of
85.
