Red Oak received its name
from the original church, which
was built of red oak logs, with
its earliest history datingback to
1803 when a treaty with the
Creek Indians, who inhabited the
land at this time, ceded four
acres of land to the white man
for a church, At this time the
land was in Baldwin County and
in 1822 it is first recorded in
New County,
The present church building
is 120 years old, however it has
kept pace with the changing times
and is today one of the finer coun~
try churches, It is a fully or
ganized church and is kept in
excellent condition, even to a
$15,000 Fellowship Building er
ected a few years ago, central
heat and air conditioned, The
church, with Gaither’s and Love
joy last year erected a parson=-
age on Jackson Highway, whichis
also modern in every way and
provides a home for the pastor
of the three churches near his
churches and the members of
the congregations,
the church; Rev, W, F, Lunsford, visiting minister; John L, Rooks,
W, Roy Aiken, Sr,, Conrad Reynolds, Mrs. Stanley Jones, and Mrs,
Hugh Aiken,
In the adjoining cemetery an
inscription on one of the graves
bears the date 1820, with the
name illegible, The earliest
legible marker is that of Major
Lewis Hogg, an officer in the
Revolutionary War, with the date
1828.
