What Causes Varicose Veins?
Disfiguring varicose veins can be caused by hereditary weak
ness in the veins, or by a variety of other factors, including blows,
bruises and long periods of straining or standing In one’s oc
cupation, according to William O. Elson, medical research dir-
ector of the Bauer & Black
Division of the Kendall Com
pany.
“Another contributing cause
can be pregnancy,” Elson said.
“The extra weight which the
mother-to-be is carrying, plus
the unusual pressure exerted
on the pelvic veins, can create
or aggravate varicosities.
“Varicose veins are simply
breakdowns in the marvelous
engineering of the human
body,” said Elson. "In the long
climb which blood must make
from the feet to the heart, the
blood column is supported at
intervals by valves in the veins
— valves which keep the blood
from falling back between
heartbeats. The valves in the
veins nearest to the surface of
the body have less muscle and
tissue support — and are most
likely to break down.”
Besides surgery, there is but
one effective remedy for vari
cose veins — compression. It is
important, according to Elson,
that the compression be pro
perly applied, with steady even
pressure, and in decreasing
force as it is applied upwards
on the leg.
"That means,” said Elson,
"that effective support can only

Wall-Hung Bench
If there’s a three or four-foot
high concrete retaining wall in
your back yard, use it to sup
port a garden bench. Build a
seat of fir 2x4s and attach it to
the wall with angle irons. Prop
cushions against the wall.

be given by scientifically-made
elastic stockings designed to
impart the strongest pressure
at the point where they are
stretched the least — the ankle
— and reduced pressure at the
points where they are stretch
ed the most — the calf and the
thigh.
“Any uneven pressure can be
most harmful, because it could
act, tourniquet-like, to inter
fere with blood flow instead
of accelerating it.
“Today’s elastic stockings
are most attractive," said El
son. "The modem woman has
no reason to avoid wearing
them. They are available in
dress wear styles and no longer
look like the elastic stockings
of former years. Bauer & Black
stockings, for example, can be
purchased in full ultra-sheer,
just as in regular hosiery, or
in cosmetic sheer, which hides
varicose veins.
"In the final analysis,” Elson
said, "to the woman who has
varicose veins, the cause is no
longer important — only the
treatment; and fine elastic
stockings provide both therapy
and help in preventing further
circulation problems.”
HIGHWAY SPECTACULAR
ONLY MINOR CUTS resulted from this spectacular acci
dent on Cleveland's busy Lakeland Freeway when a huge
truck loaded with hot asphalt lost a rear wheel and ca
reened out-of-control. Instead of crossing into oncoming
traffic, the truck and trailer were halted by the Freeway’s
tough steel median barrier. In the continuing drive for
highway safety, median guard rails can prevent crossover
head-on collisions which now account for about 8,000
fatalities annually.
Keep An Eye Out
For Inflation
Have you taken a look at your
homeowners insurance policy la
tely? If not, there’s a good chan
ce that you have become one of
the growing number of persons
who are underinsured.
Construction costs are rising
at least 5 per cent each year,
the cost of home repair and main
tenance has risen 28 to 35 per
cent since 1959, and market val
ues of dwellings in most areas
are mounting steadily.
As a result, every homeown
er should review his coverage
periodically to keep it in pace
with Inflation, just as he must
keep his aluminum siding and
shingle roofing In good repair.

Fence-y Cooler
If there’s a tall, wood fence
in your yard or a wood screen
surrounding the patio, use it as
an outdoor “air conditioning
unit” on hot nights. Landscape
Designer Richard W. Painter,
Portland, Or., says that wetting
down the fence with the garden
hose will transform it to a cool
ing tower.
