of Georgia with a major in Che
mistry.
Miss Rose Marie Beischer,
with a B. A. from Duke Univer
sity and a M. A. from Emory
University; will join the Divi
sion of History and Social Sc
ience as instructor in History.
She will replace Mr. Nell Penn
who Is on leave of absence to
complete his doctoral studies.
Mr. Donovan D. Jones, a new
addition to the faculty, will ser
ve as Instructor in Geology and
Geography. He is a graduate of
Oxford College and Emory Uni
versity, and is working on his
thesis for the completion of the
Master’s degree at Emory. Mr.
Jones taught In the summer ses
sion.
Mr. Carl William Pharis, hol
ding the B. S. and M. A. degrees
from Eastern Kentucky Univer
sity, will be an instructor in
the division of Health and Phy
sical Education. He will replace
Mr. William Sells who will be
gin his doctoral studies while
doing some teaching.
Miss Elizabeth Anne William
son, with the A. B. and M.Ed.
degrees from the University of
Georgia, is the replacement for
Miss Judith Greer who is pur
suing her doctoral studies at
the University of Georgia. Miss
Williamson, who was elected Phi
Beta Kappa, will be the Women’s
Counsellor and Residence Di
rector.
Mr. Roy B. Woodward, with the
B. S. and M. A. degrees from
Murray State University, will
join the staff as Admissions
Counsellor. Mr. Woodward co
mes from Owensboro, Kentucky
where he taught and was Chair
man of the Social Sciences at
the Secondary Level of Public
Education. Mr. and Mrs. Wood
ward reside at 2110 Church St
reet, Covington.
Mrs. Josephine Walton will
work full time as a member of
the library staff. She has been
serving part time in this capa
city.
Mrs. Berta Rodriguez will be
Director of the Language Labo
ratory. She assisted In this area
during the latter part of the
1968-69 academic year.
These new people and the other
members of the faculty, admini
stration and staff will hold the
annual Pre-College Year - Fac
ulty Conference September 18 and
19.
Fun, frolic and feast are on the
menu for the all-college picnic
schedule for Thursday afternoon
September 18. The faculty, staff,
administration and families enjoy
this annual affair. The fun will
begin for the body (and heart)
at 5:15. The food will be ser
ved in the cafeteria at 6:00 P.M.
with picnic tables set up in the
court of the cafeteria - residen
ce complex.

Countians Get
Degrees At Go.
ATHENS — Twelve students
from Newton County were among
the more than 1,700 students re
ceiving degrees from the Univer
sity of Georgia August 22 in sum
mer commencement exercises.
Morris Abram, president of
Brandeis University, was spea
ker at the ceremonies. More than
700 advanced degrees were
among the total conferred.

attending the performance. Be

Mrs. Broussard Describes
Damage In Gulf Shelter
Editor’s Note: Below is a
portion of a letter received here
by Mr. and Mrs. Grady Bowden
from their daughter, Mrs. J. R.
(Betty) Broussard, describing
some of the terrors during the
Gulf Coast Hurricane Camille
destruction.
“I worked at the last shelter
on The Point about one block
from Ocean Springs bridge. I
had one Civil Defense worker, one
Red Cross worker, two school
personnel and one policeman for
502 people, about 50 infants and
100 children, included. Ours
was the most dangerous shelter
in Biloxi, a three story school
building. We lost all commun-

last windows blew out before
10 p. m., the front door blew
out about 10:15 and nine feet of
water came in.
“I had already gotten every
one upstairs by 9:45 p. m. and
had about 30-35 people needed
medical attention. I put all these
in two rooms. There wasn’t any
time for me to get scared but
after the 150-175 miles hour wind
came down to 80-100. I looked
out the south window as a big
grocery store about a block from
us came by. A 16 inch gas
main bursted, we didn’t tell the
people about the gas main. About
40 cars parked around the school
house were being tossed about In
the water like match sticks. Fr
eezers and all types of furniture
were being hurled around. It
was like a big, bad nightmare.
“By 6 a. m. the water had re
ceded and some of the people be
gan to leave to see if they could
find any of their houses or any
thing. I stayed until 1 p. m.
Had to walk four blocks to get
to where Johnny was waiting for
