John M. Barker
John M. Barker of Newborn
passed away In a private hos
pital on Sunday, August 24, fol
lowing a short Illness. He was 80
years old at the time of his death
and a native of Jasper County.
He was a retired employee of
Bibb Manufacturing Company and
a farmer.
Funeral services were conduc
ted on Tuesday afternoon, August
26, at the Chapel of Harwell Fu
neral Home with Rev. Hollis
Lunsford, pastor of Pitts Chapel
Methodist Church, officiating at
the last rites. Interment was In
Henderson Cemetery near Shady
Dale, with J. C. Harwell and Son
Funeral Home in charge of ar
rangements and his grandsons
serving as pallbearers.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Emma Speer Barker, Newborn;
three sons, J. P. Barker, Por
terdale; Bobby Barker, Newborn;
Tommy Barker, Covington; five
daughters, Mrs. Thomas Moss,
Covington; Mrs. Alice Stokes,
Rock Hill, South Carolina; Mrs.
Jeanette Reagan, Porterdale;
Mrs. Mattle Wyatt, Shady Dale;
Mrs. Josie Murphy, Newborn;

Mrs. Laura Mayes
Mrs. Laura Mayes passed away
at her home on Route 1, Coving
ton, on Wednesday, August 20,
after a short Illness. She was a
native of Marshalvllle, Alabama
and was 65 years old.
Funeral services were con
ducted on Friday afternoon, Au
gust 22, at Grace Baptist Church
with Rev. James Morgan and
Rev. Bill Cagle officiating. In
terment was In Baptist Ceme
tery at Porterdale, with J. C.
Harwell and Son Funeral Home
in charge of arrangements.

vation committee elections, ac
cording to Newton County ASC
Committee Chairman H. G. Jon

He said any resident of the
county who Is eligible to take
part in a farm program adminis
tered by ASCS is eligible to vote
in the community committee elec
tions to be held the third week
in September. This applies with
out regard to sex, race, color,
religion, or national origin.
“Our list of known eligible
voters totals 940 and I am hope
ful that each wiU cast a ballot,”
the ASC Chairman said.
He pointed out there may be
agricultural producers—owners,
operators, tenants, or sharecrop
pers — who are eligible to vote
but are not on the eligible vot-

Medal; the Purple Heart, the Good

Attached Device, 1960; the Com
bat Infantryman Badge and the
Sharpshooter Badge with mac
hine gun, automatic rifle, and ri
fle bars.
The citation for the Bronze
Star Medal stated in part: “The
energetic application of his ex
tensive knowledge has materially
contributed to the efforts of the
United States mission to the Re
public of Vietnam to assist that
country in ridding Itself of the
communist threat to its free
dom.”
Also present at the ceremony
were: Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Gar
rett, brother and sister-in-law
of PFC Garrett; Mr. and Mrs.
R. L. Ellington; Mrs. Paul Lan
dress; Miss Elaine Carroll and
Terry Skinner.

Almost every agricultural pro
ducer in the county is an eli
gible voter, according to the ASC
Committee Chairman. “For in
stance, If he produced a crop eli
gible for price support, he is an
eligible voter. He doesn’t neces
sarily have to actually apply for
price support, so long as he has
a crop which was eligible for
price support,” said Mr. Jones.
“If he has cropland in any
of the various retirement or di
version programs of the U. S.
Dept, of Agriculture, he is an
eligible voter.

cropland retirement and diver
sion programs, the sugar pro
gram, wool and mohair incen
tive production program, wheat
certificate program, the farm
storage and drying equipment loan
program and the Agricultural
Conservation Program, a joint
effort by landowners and the U.
S. Department of Agriculture to
preserve our Nation’s land, water
