New USDA Agency Helps Hurricane Relief
ATLANTA — The Southeast
regional office of the Food and
Nutrition Service, the U. S. De
partment of Agriculture’s newest
agency, reports active participa
tion of its personnel in disaster
relief work in the Mississippi
Gulf Coast area hit by Hurricane
Camille.
Within 48 hours after Camille
had passed over the Mississippi
Gulf Coast, more than 300,000
pounds of USDA food arrived in
the Gulfport - Biloxi area. And,
several teams of Food and Nutri
tion Service personnel were
working in the disaster area with
state and local officials, as well
as private relief agencies.
The first USDA team was on
hand in Mobile, Ala., early Sun
day before Hurricane Camille hit
the coast with all her fury. The
second team was dispatched early
Monday to Jackson, Miss., to be
gin coordinating shipments of
food into the area, while a third
team was dispatched directly to
the Gulfport-Biloxi area.
Officers-in-charge of Food and
Nutrition Service field offices at
Hattiesburg and McComb, Miss.,
also were assessing the need for
USDA food assistance in their
areas.
Meanwhile, a team from the
Food and Nutrition service’s sou
thwest regional office was work
ing in Louisiana’s hurricane -
ravaged areas.
USDA donated foods were used
in feeding persons taking shelter
in schools along the Gulf Coast
during and Immediately after the

storm. Disaster relief agencies
had authority to use the USDA
foods in school lunchrooms. The
foods will be replaced by the Food
and Nutrition service for school
lunch use just as soon as pos
sible.
Russell H. James, director of
the regional FNS office at At
lanta said that additional suppl
ies of USDA food are being di
verted from regular distributic
channels for use in feeding the
disaster victims.
James pointed out that his ag
ency will provide food assistance
in the disaster area as long as
the need exists, to addition, the
Food and Nutrition service Is es
tablishing an emergency family
food assistance program to take
care of families that have been
displaced because of the hurri
cane.
Families already receiving
USDA food assistance under the
food stamp or food donation pro
gram will continue receiving this
food help.
The foods being shipped into the
disaster area are the same foods
that USDA’s Consumer and Mar
keting Service buys for distri
bution by the Food and Nutrit
ion Service to needy families get
ting regular food assistance and
to schools operating lunch pro
grams.
The food items Included canned
meats and poultry, canned vege
tables, fruit juices, peanut butter
and staple items.
The Food and Nutrition Service
was established Aug. 8 by Sec-
retary of Agriculture Clifford
Hardin. The new USDA agency
encompasses the family feeding
and child nutrition programs for
merly administered by the Con
sumer and Marketing Service.
The Southeast regional office
administers regular food assis
tance programs through state and
local agencies In nine southeas
tern states, Puerto Rico and the
Virgin Islands.
Georgia Power
Comes To Aid
Os Gulf Coast
The Georgia Power Company
Wednesday continued to pour men
and equipment into the Gulf
coast area ripped recently by the
200-mile-per-hour winds of Hur
ricane Camille.
Departing August 20 from the
company’s Columbus, Macon and
Valdosta divisions were 13 line
crews numbering 53 men. This
brings the total number of Geor
gia Power personnel in the area
to 139.
Eighty-six men composing 11
crews departed from the At
lanta, Athens, Rome and Macon
divisions early August 25 while
the full fury of the storm still
was being felt in the distressed
area.
Late Wednesday plans were be
ing made to dispatch service tr
ucks from the Atlanta and Col
umbus divisions to handle main
tenance on the 80 power com
pany vehicles concentrated in
the storm-torn region. Equip
ment already in the area includ
es pickup trucks, bucket trucks,
and Une trucks and a number of
automobiles manned by super
visory personnel. All are equip
ped with two-way radios.
Georgia Power officials said
Wednesday the crews were join
ing personnel from other com
panies in the Southeast in around
the-clock efforts to repair the
massive damage and restore ele
ctric service to the ravaged coas
tal section.
Rosehill Recreation
Club Has Final
Meeting Os Season
Wednesday, August 20, brought
to a close the first efforts to es
tablish a recreation club for
Rosehill in Porterdale. Meet
ing weekly at Rev. James Brown’s
Mount Calvary Baptist Church
Mrs. Evelyn Brown, and Mrs.
Eddie Robinson directed the pro
gram.
Games, sports, stories and a
full music program were pre
sented. The children performed
a choral program August 20 tor
attending guests. Assisting the
directors were the Misses Deb
bie Paty, Jodie Paty, Susan Paty,
Janice Katz; and Marc, Paul and
John Robinson. Refreshments
were served at each meeting.
Rosehill also has an adult nei
ghborhood club which has urged
a neighborhood cleanup campaign
and Is working to establish a
childrens’ playground.
RA’s Took Trip
To North Georgia
The Porterdale Royal Ambas
sadors enjoyed a camping trip to
Vogel State Park part of last
week. The group left the Por
terdale Baptist Church by cars
and truck at noon on Wednesday
for a weekend camping trip. Due
to the severe weather conditions
they were forced to return home
on Friday afternoon.
