CAR Met With Mrs. McKenzie
Sunday afternoon, November
2, Sergeant Newton Junior Soc
iety, Children of the American
Revolution, met atthe home of the
Senior President, Mrs, H, E,
McKenzie,
Halloween decorations, and
pumpkins holding arrangements
of orange marigolds lent color
and gaiety to the festive scene,
A Quiz Game featuring fam=
ous persons in AmericanHistory
created much interest as the
thirteen young people present put
on their thinking caps and tried
to out-do each other in recalling
events in our country’s past,
Letice McGaughey, of Mansfield,
was the lucky winner of theprize
given by the hostess,
Mrs, McKenzie then intro
duced the Regent of the DAR
Chapter, Mrs. Lee Stephenson,
who took the group on a short
tour of Newton County, via a
Highway map, to Hightower Tra
il, called Etowah by the Cher
okee Indians who first used it as
a road from Augusta to Tellico
Plaiy s, Tennessee, She also
pointed out the many family and
church-yard cemeteries marked
on the map, and described New=
ton County as it was when the
first white Settlers began to set
up their homes inthe wilderness,
Thus describing the beginnings
of Newton County, she went on to
discuss what the science of gen=
ealogy is all about, As in the
Book of Genesis, it is a search
for our own beginnings as fam=
ilies, an orderly, step-by-step
search for the ancestors whopre=
ceded us on earth, We wererat
her amazed to learn that in ten
generations, we each have 1,028
grand-parents,
She distributed charts, andex=
plained how, starting with our=-
selves, we can go back in time
for many generations.
Mrs. McKenzie was assisted in
entertaining by Mrs. Kent Camp
bell, Orange punch, chocolate
cakes and colorful candies and
nuts were enjoyed duringasocial
hour,
Plans were made to visit the
Georgia Department of Archives
and History on the last Saturday
