Gator Bowl Games Have Been
Thrilling Since Ga.-Md. Tie
JACKSONVILLE, FLA.—The
Gator Bowl footbail classic was
in its third year---January 1948
-=-=when the first Southeastern
Conference team appeared in the
local game.
Georgia and Maryland tied,
20-20, in that contest before a
crowd of 16,666,
It was not until five years
later that another SEC team ap=
peared in the annual classic,
with Florida winning 14-13 over
Tulsa.
The NCHS Touchdown Club is
sending the Newton Ram Varsity
to the ¢Silver Anniversary
Game?? at Jacksonville this year
to see the spectacle.
Nowadays, it is not uncommon
to find as many as six SEC teams
in holiday bowl games, but back
in 1948 an ‘unofficial’® ban on
bowl games was declared in the
SEC, with participation limited
to the Cotton, Sugar and Orange
Bowls. The league move came
about after several bowl come
mittees had been at work in the
south, including the Delta Bowl,
the Dixie Bowl and the Oil Bowl.
Many of the newly named bowls
were without firm financial back=
ing. Mississippi won the SEC
title in 1947, and would have been
the Orange Bowl team that year,
but elected to honor a com=-
mitment to play in the Delta
Bowl, winning 13-9 over TCU.,
Thus the ‘‘unofficial’’ ban.
But the Gator Bowl people
worked hard to show the SEC
and the rest of the country, thaf
they were people who could be
trusted, and who had the best
interest of the colleges at heart.
