Wells-Cheek, Jr. Engagement
Is Announced; March Nuptials
Mr, and Mrs. Clarence B,
Wells, Sr, announce the engage=
ment of their daughter, Betty Di
ane to Johnny C, Cheek, Jr., son
of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Cheek of
Franklin, Kentucky.
Miss Wells graduated from
Newton County High School in
1967, She is presently em
ployed at C & D Batteries, Con=
yers,
Mr. Cheek graduated from Fr=
anklin County High School in
Franklin, Kentucky in 1966. He
is presently serving in the U, S,
Air Force.
An early March wedding is
planned.
Smallwood-Helms Nuptials
December 7 At Grace Church
Mr. and Mrs. C., L. Smallwood
announce the engagement of their
daughter, Polly Elizabeth Small
wood, to John Marvin Helms, the
son of Mr, and Mrs. W, S, Helms
of Thomaston,
Miss Smallwood is a graduate
of Newton County High School
and attended DeKalb Tech. Sheis
presently employed with State
Highway Department, personnel
office, in Thomaston.
Woman’s Club At Porterdale
Makes Thanksgiving Plans
PORTERDALE — Mrs. Mellie
Veal presided and led the open=
ing prayer at the meeting of the
Porterdale Woman’s Club, Mo
rning Division, on Tuesday, Nov=
ember 18, at ten o’clock. A
congealed fruit dessert with cof
fee and Cokes was served prior
to the formal meeting.
Everyone united in singing “A
Thanksgiving Hymn’’ accompan=
fed by Mrs. Veal and shared in
a prayer responsively.
Minutes were read and the roll
was called by Miss Sadie Polson.
Ten members and three visitors
were present.
Mrs. W, C, Ivey announced
plans for the Thanksgiving re
membrances and urged their at
tendance on Wednesday morning,
November 26, at eight-thirty A.
M, to prepare and deliver these
items.
A list was circulated on which
members volunteered to serveat
the Bibb Products Store which is

at Grace Baptist Church, Por

on activities from the Evening
Division meeting of the previous
evening.

meeting with prayer.
Stevie Knight
Has Party
Stevie Knight, the son of Mr.
and Mrs. R. L. Knight, observed
his 10th birthday Thursday, Nov=-
ember 13, with a party at the
School of Care in Oxford.
He, with members of the sch=
001, enjoyed the excitement of
opening his presents from cl=
assmates and refreshments of
cake and ice cream, served by
his mother. Balloons were used
as decorations and then enjoyed
by the children as mementoes of
this occasion,

Met Monday At Clubroom

meeting of the club on Monday,
November 17, at seven=thirty o’-
clocke Mrs, J. T. Jaynes led
the opening prayer, after which
Mrs. Henry Whitfield presided
for a brief business session.
Forty-five members were
present for reports regarding the
Bibb Products Store, the Cancer
Linen Closet where twenty-one
ladies worked for forty-eight and
a half hours on November 3,
the Thanksgiving remembrances
for shut-ins, and the club
treasury. The need for

Pack #6O was presented and
members voted to purchase three

Miss Susan Cooper, December
bride-elect, was honored on Mon=-
day evening, November 10, witha
shower at the home of Mrs. Joyce
Manus at Eastwyck Village Ap
artments in Decatur.

Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Thacker
of Salem announce the marriage
of their daughter, Dianne, to Ed=-
sel Michael Arnold, the son of Mr.
and Mrs. C, E, Arnold of Cov
ington. The double ring wedding
service was performed by Rev.
Mel Simons, pastor of Alcovy
United Methodist Church,on Fri=-
day evening, November 7, in Soc=
ial Circle.
Mrs. Arnold is a graduate
of Newton County High School
in the class of 1967 and is em=
ployed by Southern Bell Tele=-
phone Company in Covington.
Mr. Arnold attended Newton
County High School and served
two years with the U, S, Navy
at the submarine base in Hawaii.
He is presently employed with
M & M Steel Company in Lithonia.

A very interesting program was
presented by Mrs. Neal Hinton,
who showed slides and narrated
her recent trip to Japan
and Hawaii,
During a fellowship time,
delicious congealed dessert and
coffee were served by Mrs. Grace
Moore and her committee.
Members were asked to assist
in preparing the Thanksgiving
remembrances on Wednesday,
November 26, beginning at eight=-
thirty A. M. A list of volunteers
to work at the Bibb Products
Store was also compiled,
delicious refreshments were
served, was covered with a white
cloth and held an arrangement
of variegated fall flowers. At
one end of the table a small ume
brella held beautifully wrapped
packages which extended onto the
table for further decoration.
For this occasion Miss Coo=
per was attractively dressed in
a black and white wool jumper
with which she wore red acces~
sories. As she opened her many
beautifully wrapped packages she
graciously thanked each one pre=
sent for their gift.

will hold their regular com
munication on Tuesday, Novem=
ber 25, 1969, at 7:30 P,M. This
also will be past Masters’ night,
