Diabetic Population Has
Doubled Within 20 Years
Is diabetes—the disorder that
diet, exercise and insulinor pills
control—in danger itself of get
ting out of control? At the mom
ent, there does not seem to bean
answer to this question, but some
alarming statistics illustrate the
dramatic increase in the pre=-
valence of diabetes,
In the last two decades, the
number of diabetics in the United
States has about doubled, to an
estimated 4,200,000 persons,
And for several logical reasons
this geometric rise will continue
in the future,
Today diabetes ranks seventh
among the causes of death by dis=
ease in this country, Yet, para
doxically, most diabetics event=
ually die of some other compli
cation, such as heart disease,
cerebral hemorrhage, or kidney
disease, Thus the influence of
diabetes on mortality rates is by
far more pervasive than the of=-
ficial figures indicate, And be=
cause there is no known cure for
the condition, this influence will
be stronger in the yearstocome,
Why? The answer to this
question can be summarized in
five key words: age, population,
heredity, obesity and detection,
People are living longer today,
on the average, than they did a
generation or two ago. And it is
the older person who is partic~
ularly prone to diabetes, While
it is true that the disorder can
occur at a very early age, four
out of five diabetics are over 45
when they develop the disorder,

Older women are especially sus
ceptible: Between the ages of
55 and 64, the diabetic rate am=
ong women is twice as high as
among men,
In 1950, about 150 million per=
sons lived in the United States,
Today the population is more than
200 million, The American Dia
betes Association estimates that
one person in twenty isanactual,
an unknown, or a potential diab
etic, Asthepopulationincreases,
so does the number of diabetics,
Diabetes is known to run in
families, Most diabetics have
had at least one blood relative
who was a diabetic, If both par=-
ents have diabetes, the chances
are that all of their children will
develop diabetes at some time,
if they live long enough, In ad
dition, the Association estimates
that some 50 million Americans
(one in four) are ‘carriers’ of
diabetes =-- they may transmit
the disorder to offspring without
developing the condition them=
selves,
Today more people are eating
richer foods than at any time in
history, The richer a nation’s
diet, the greater the trend to
obesity, and there is a close
relationship between diabetes and
obesity, More than eight out of
ten adults who develop diabetes
are overweight before their con
dition develops. A planned diet,
leading to weight reduction, is
usually the first step prescribed
by a physician who is treating

diabetic,
A final reason for the rapid
increase in the diabetes rate is
the only encouraging part of the
picture, Modern screening and
diagnostic techniques are adding
people to the diabetic population
before they might otherwise be
included. The earlier some
one’s diabetes is detected and
treatment begins, the easier he
can control it.
Those who benefit most from
detection tests are the mild dia
betics who have the disorder but
don’t yet know about it, There
are more than 1,600,000 of these
¢thidden’’ diabetics in this coun=
try.
To help these people, the Am=
erican Diabetes Association, to
gether with Affiliate Associations
and Medical Societies, sponsors
annual Diabetes Detection Dri
ves., Each year=-long Drive be=-
gins with Diabetes Week: Nov
ember 16-22 this year, Everyone
in the community is urged to
take the test, Those whoareover
forty, weigh more than they sho
uld, and have a family history of
diabetes are especially urged to
be tested,
Over 70% of the Americans
classified as blind, under the
national legal definition of
blindness, are not totally blind
and do have partial sight, The
American Optometric As
sociation reports that two-thirds
of those legally blind persons
capable 'of distinguishing light
from dark can be made capable
of visual reading through the use
of low vision optical aids, many
of which have been developed in
the last 15 years,
