Mrs. Dietz Tells 0i
Library’s Services
Mrs, Harry Dietz, librarian
at the Newton County Library,
was guest speaker at the Woman's
Club on Tuesday, November lith,
Mrs., Dietz gave valuable
information about the library, She
stated that in the last few years
the ecirculation of books has
about doubled that of former
years, About 19,000 books were
checked out in the first six months
of this year.
The Newton County Library
is affiliated with the DeKalb
County Library Association, and
for this reason it is able to
maintain a large selection
of books. Books are shipped in
every second and fourth Tuesday
of the month from the Dekalb
system. Therearenow about2o,-
000 books available,
The Newton County Library
sponsors a summer reading
program for children in co
operation with the Reading
Department of the State De
partment of Education, Teachers
have reported that this program
has been most beneficial for those
children who have participated,
Mrs. Dietz stated that mysteries
are most popular among adults,
¢¢White Columns in Georgia’’ and
¢‘The Diary of Dolly Lunt Burge”
are two books most requested
by newcomers to this area,
The Newton County Library is
gradually acquiring a genealog
jcal section, mostly through
memorial gifts, The most recent
addition to this section is ‘“The
Georgia Enterprise’’ and ‘‘The
Covington Star’’, a collection of
news items from our local
newspapers during the years
1865-1904, It was interesting that

Patterson made a brochure of the
outstanding old homes and sites.
Coples of this brochure may be
obtained free at the library.
The mosturgent problem facing
the library is the lack of space,
Provision will have to be made
in the near future for more space,
The library lis closed on
Wednesday afternoon, however,
the building may be used
for meetings at this time,
Mrs, Richard George, presi=
dent of the Covington Woman’s
Club presided over the business
meeting which followed,
Mrs. Belmont Dennis, Chair
man of the Conservation
Committee, reported that 103
Cherokee Rose bushes had been
sold and they will be delivered
to the Woman’s Club building in
about two weeks, It is one of
the projects of the Georgia
Federation of Woman’s Clubs to
promote the use of the Cherokee
Rose, our state flower, throughout
Georgia. Cherokee Rose bushes
will be planted at the wayside
park on Highway 278 by
the Covington Woman’s Club,
Mrs., Dennis also reported that
a pink dogwood tree will be planted
at the club building,
Mrs, W, L, Campbell, chairman
of the Education Committee,
announced that members of the
Woman’s Club will baby=-sit, free
of charge, between 9 a, m, and
5 p. m, on December 3rd, Any
mother may leave her children
at the Woman’s Club while she
is voting,
Mrs, Jack Morgan, chairman
of the Home Life Committee,
reported that her committee was
preparing a book on household
hints, and she requested that
members submit ideas for
simplifying household duties,
Mrs, Morgan announced that the
Woman’s Club, in cooperation
with Kiwanis Club, would sponsor
a program informing the high
school students of the problems
of drug use,
