TENN. MEETS FLORIDA IN GATOR

Coach Vince Dooley’s Bulldogs
will be making a return trip to the
Sun Bowl at El Paso, Texas, wh=-
ere Vince took his first team in
1964 and downed a fine Texas
Tech Team 7-0, Nebraska will
be the opponent, Coach Bob De
vaney’s Mid-West team has lost
two games this year, but both to
top-rated teams, Southern Cali
fornia and Missouri,
The Newton Ram football team,
coaches, wives, parents and
members of the Newton High
Touchdown Club will get to see
an SEC match in the Gator Bowl
at Jacksonville on Saturday, Dec,

Jacksonville's Gator Bowl, Capacity 72,000 Fans
Tom Kinney Given Testimonial Dinner
Tom Kinney, Sports Editor of
The Gwinnett Daily News,
Lawrenceville, and a former
Newton Countian, was given a
Special Testimonial Dinner atthe
Suwanee Holiday Inn Monday
evening, Main speaker for the
occasion was Harry Mehre,
former coach at the University
of Georgia and later at Ole Miss,
Kinney, who has been covering
sports in the southeastern states
for over 40 years, has recently
suffered three heart attacks, The
first of these attacks took place
on March 27, after which he spent
three weeks in intensive care
at Emory University Hospital,
He has been hospitalized four
times in the past seven months
at the Veteran’s Hospital
in Atlanta,
As a result of his illness,
Tom’s sportswriting has been
sharply curtailed after he had
produced reams of copy for four
decades.

Florida Gators are paired in that
game. The local TD club is
sponsoring the all-expense trip to
Jacksonville for the Newton High
varsity football team,
Peach Bowl, in Atlanta, which
is nearest to Covington, has sign=
ed the University of South Caro
lina and West Virginia for their
second annual game on Decem=-
ber 30th, These two teams are
newcomers to bowling, but the
coaches are well-known in Ge
orgia and throughout the nation,
Paul Dietzel is the mentor at
S. C, and Jim Carlen is the head=
man at West Va, Dietzel had a
National Champion at LSU in
1957, Carlen was an assistant
coach under Georgia Tech’s Bo
bby Dodd at Atlanta a few years
agoe

Tom was sports editor of the
Gainesville (Georgia) Eagle when
he covered his first college foot
ball game, the battle between
Georgia and Yale whichdedicated
Sanford Stadium 40 years ago.
He later served as sports editor
of the Columbus (Georgia)
Ledger-Enquirer for 14 years;
was Augusta Chronicle editor on
two occasions; sports editor of
the Atlanta Times for seven
months of its short existence;
was an assistant to Fred Russell
of the Nashville (Tennessee)
Banner; served on the sports
desk of the Atlanta Constitution
and later on its news copy desk;
during World War 11, Tom was
editor of the Daily Pacifican, an
Army newspaper with a daily
circulation of 255,000, Thilenius,
who is slated to introduce Mehre as
dinner speaker, was Tom’s sports
editor in Manila at that time.

BILLY CHILDERS and Johnny Moon were the Newton County High
Touchdown Club honorees for the final game of the season against
Burney Harris High School of Athens, Moon was the Outstanding
Offensive player and Childers won the Outstanding Defensive trophy.
They received their awards at the school chapel assembly Friday
morning from Committee Chairman Walter Partee,

Dooley Upset At Fans’Booing
Georgia Coach Vince Dooley seemed visibly upset Sunday after
noon on his TV show he referred to the fans discourteous treat
ment of one of his players (he apparently referred to the ‘‘booing”
of Mike CavanzhinSaturday’s game against Auburnat Sanford Stadium,
We agree with Coach Dooley that this gesture was uncalled for;
after all, these same fans cheered Cavan last year when the Bull
dogs were winning nearly all their games ~ . . Radio Station WGFS
in Covington will re-play the Newton Ram-Carver High game on
Saturday afternoon at 2:05 p, m, This was the quarter-final basket
ball game of the State AA Tournament in Atlanta last March in
which the Rams lost 66-61.,
Coach Jordan’s Best Team
Georgia Tech has four football players who are worthy of All-
American consideration this: season, It is interesting to note that
all four are less than 6 ft, tall. They are: Rock Perdoni, 5-10 1/2
tackle; Joe Vitunic, 5-11 1/2 guard; Jeff Ford, 5-10 halfback; and
Mike Wysong, 5-9 1/2 safety, . .Jim Allen of Covington was a starter
in the backfield Saturday when the Lees-Mcßae College freshmen

Win 3 Trophies In ‘Granite Bowl’
Two ‘‘Championship?’ trophies
and a ‘“‘Runner-Up’’ trophy were
earned by the Newton Junior
Foothall league in play in the
‘“Granite Bowl’” at Stone Moun
tain, Saturday, November 15th.
At 2:00 p. m. a motorcade
led by League President Clyde
Webb and school buses of Divi=
sion I Champion Jets and Divie
sion II Champions Red Devil
players and cheerleaders left
Sharp Field for the Granite Bowl.
Division 111 Champion Raiders
followered at 6:00 p., m.
The Jets met the Stone Moun=
tain Falcons at 4:00 p. m. These
young under 65 Ib. boys played a
most exciting game, It was a
hard-hitting defensive game with
the Jets squeezing by with a 7-0
victory. The winning touchdown
came when Bonham Johnsen Jre
took the ball from the Falcon
quarterback’s hands and made a
lightning run for a TD,
During the halftime, Division
I Queen Miss Karen Mitcham of
the Jets cheering squad was es=
corted to the center of the field
by Jets players Don Holder and
Ken Webb and the Jets Cheer=-
leaders, There she was pre=-
sented a cheering trophy and
corsage and crowned with atiara
by Mrs. Nelson Allen, Cheer
leader Coach of the Jets.
All the halftime festivities
were announced by Master of
Ceremonies George Patton.

Bowl.” Bonham Johnson, Jr, re=
ceived the Jets Most Valuable
Player Trophy. The spectators
felt that the Jets had many other
valuable players too.
The Newton fans shivered in
the freezing wind from both cold
and excitment as the Division
II Champion ¢Devils’ met the
Stcne Mountain Pirates. The size
and age of these young players
was forgotten almostas they per=
formed in an evenly matched,
hard-hitting game. The Pirates
barely squeezed by with a 7-0
victory over our Devils.
In the halftime festivities Di
vision II Queen from the ¢‘Out
laws’’, Miss Sara Jean Dawkins
was escorted onto the field by
the Devil Cheering Squad and
crowned by Devil Cheerleader
Coach, Mrs. Pat Anglin. She too
received a Queen’s cheeringtro
phy and corsage.
Following the game, Devil Head
Coach Johnny Hammonds was
presented the ‘‘Runner«Up 75 Ibs,
1969 Granite Bowl’’ trophy. De
vils ¢*Most Valuable Player’’,
Mike Johnson received a trophy.
At 8:00 p. m, Division I
Champion Raiders met the Stone
Mountain Pirates. The great
coordination and team work as
the Raiders held the Pirates sc
oreless as the Raiders tallied up
27 points.

League Members were asked to
select the Most Valuable Players
of each Stone Mountain team and
Stone Mountain’s league Come=
mittee selected Newton’s Most
Valuable Players. The commit=
tee’s did an excellent job; one
commented that it was a most
difficult job because each game
featured many stars.

well disciplined program.
