Bradley’s Record Is Phenomenal
Few high school basketball coaches in the State of Georgia have
attained the fame that Ronald Bradley has amassed at Newton County
High School since he took over the boys varsity in the fall of 1958,
Invariable his teams are ranked with the elite in the state during
the cage season, :
Bradley was graduated from Avondale High School in 1953, While

to Coach Ronald Bradley. Bradley points out a significant trend

at Avondale he was an outstanding athlete in all three major sports,
He was named to the All-Region All Star Basketball teams in 1950,
1951, 1952 and 1953, and was also named to the All-time DeKalb
County All Star Basketball Teams,
His senior year in high school, he was leading scorer on the foot
ball team, leading scorer on the basketball team, and leading hitter
on the baseball beam, which helped him to be voted ‘‘Most Athletic’
by his classmates, While at Avondale, Coach Bradley played on a
State Class A Runner-Up Basketball Team. In 1952 and 1953 he
was chosen to paly in the Greater-Atlanta All Star Baseball game, and
in 1953 was chosen to play in the North-South Baseball game and
the North-South Basketball game,
Since becoming coach at Newton County High, Coach Bradley
has had 12 players chosen for these games, and has also coached
in four of the North-South Basketball games,
From Avondale, Coach Bradley went to the University of Georgia
on a basketball-baseball grant-in-aid. He played varsity basketball
three years, and varsity baseball four years.
His senior year at the University of Georgia, he was elected Most
Valuable player Ebaseball) by his teammates. He received a B,S, of
Ed, degree from the University in June, 1957.
Since becoming coach at Newton County, Coach Bradley’s teams
have enjoyed a most enviable record of 306 wins and only 36 losses,
During this time his teams have won 129 straight games on the home
court, and lost only four at home in 1l seasons,
Coach Bradley was named Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches
in 1960 and 1961, 1964, 1965, 1968 in Basketball and in 1962 and 1963,

10 Rams Have
Been Chosen In
All-Star Game
In the past 10 years the Newton
County Rams have had 10 players
chosen for the North Georgia All-
Star basketball squad.
Coach Ronald Bradley’s first
team at NCHS was the 1958-59
team, On that club the late
Billy Dean Rutledge was chosen
as a member of the North squad,
However, in July Rutledge
drowned while fishing ina Newton
County river,
Others who were chosen
and performed creditably in the
game were: Bob Mitchell in 1961,
Billy Shaw in 1962, Terry Smith
in 1964, and Stanley Harris and
Tim Christian in the 1965 en
counter, In 1966 Bob Richardson
and Wayne Hall appeared in the
tilt, 1n1968 Terry Schell sppeared
in the game and last August
Thad Blankenship appeared inthe
game at Macon,
Coach Bradley was head coach
of the North team in 1964 and
his team posted an 87-82 victory,
On two other occasions he was
an assistant coach in the game
to T. P, Jones of Headland and
Bill Ensley of Hart County,

Six Newton County High girls
have been named to All-State
teams since 1958, Included in
the list are:
Harriett Johnson (G) 1958
Sandy King (G) 1962
Jordye Bailey (F) 1962
Carol George (G) 1963
Betty Faith Jaynes (G) 1963
Rose Mary Laster (F) 1963
It is interesting to note that
all of these players were coach
ed by Stone Cooper in his 10
years here at Newton High.
Three of the players made the
AA twinkle team in one season,
1963, when they went to the finals
in the State Tournament. They
are Carol George, Betty Faith
Jaynes and Rose Mary Laster,
NCHS girls coach Tom Wort
man was a four-letter winner in
Ohio in his high school days at
Newark, Wortman was a star
in football, basketball, baseball
and track,
