Nematodes
About this time of year many
people wonder why their vegetable
gardens or commercial farms
didn’t produce as expected. One
reason may be an Infestation
of nematodes.
To help producers control this
soil insect, pathologists with the
University of Georgia Co
operative Extension Service have
prepared a publication entitled
“Nematode Control in Georgia.”
Nematodes are found in
all parts of the world. What is
a nematode? It is a small,
slender, round worm. It is not
a stage of insect development,
nor Is it a close relative of
earthworms or grubs. Plant
feeding, injury-producing
nematodes are so small they can
not be readily seen unless they
are magnified.
However, according to the
authors of the publication, the
damage they cause is easily seen.
Nematodes cost Georgia tobacco,
cotton, peanut and vegetable pro
ducers several million dollars
each year. TTiey also cause
serious damage to other field
crops, fruit, ornamentals, and
lawns.
Fortunately, man knows enough
to successfully control most types
that damage plants in our state.
The publication, which is
available in all county Extension
Service offices, is an attempt
to answer the many questions
asked about nematodes and
recommend control practices.

Do not neglect the gift you
have. (I Tim. 4:14).
Some people discover they
have gifts that lead them to
be artists, musicians, writers,
scientists, inventors, states
men. Some of us are not blessed
with these particular ones, but
in us there is a guiding Spirit
that makes each one of us spe
cial in our own right. When we
recognize that we have God’s
Spirit as our special gift, we
will be cheerful and pleasant
in order to bring happiness to
all and be our own God-gifted
self.

occurs within 24 to 48 hours.
According to the Director

throughout the world, along
with any additions which lo

such as offering ham in ad

The Defense Supply Agen

to be issued for each holiday
dinner as follows: turkey—

192,000; potatoes—7B7,soo;
cranberry sauce — 383,933;
fruitcake -- 350,000; mince
meat — 262,500; pumpkin—

Maddox Predicts
Gain In
Population
ATLANTA (GPS) — In enter
taining some 20 executives from
nationally known consulting and
engineering firms at the Gov
ernor’s Mansion the other even
ing, Gov. Lester G. Maddox turn
ed predictor. And in this role,
he foresaw greatness in Geor
gia's future. Here’s what he told
his visitors:
“By building upon the mom
entum which we already have, I
have no doubt that Georgia is
destined to be a state of inter
national importance by the
1980’s. Those of you who have
examined national projections
can pretty well determine Geor
gia’s future by doubling such pro
jections for the state.
“When the rest of the nation
goes up a little in per capita
income, Georgia will go up a lot.
When the rest of the nation makes
a little industrial progress, Ge
orgia will make a lot.
“It is estimated that the nat
ional population will have in
creased some 50 per cent by the
year 2000. I predict that Geor
gia’s population 30 years from
now will have increased 100 per
cent.
“Those industrial consultants
represented here today would do
well to keep an eye on our state.
When the 21st Century rolls
around, those of you who have
had the foresight to recommend
Georgia to your clients wiH be
hailed as very astute economic
forecasters.”
