Peach Bowl Teams Win

The University of South Caro
lina and West Virginia won their
seasons’ final games Saturday.
The two teams meet in the se
cond Annual Peach Bowl game
December 30 at Grant Field,
Atlanta.
Paul Dietzel’s Gamecock out
fit downed the Clemson Tigers in
Clemson Saturday 27-13. SC had
already won the 1969 Atlantic
Coast Conference title. Their
season slate is 7-3.

Nebraska’s Bth Bowl Classic
ATHENS — The Sun Bowl in
El Paso Dec. 20 will be Geor
gia’s 13th bowl battle and Neb
raska’s eighth.
Georgia’s bowl record is
7-4-1, Nebraska’s 2-5-0.
The Bulldogs, incidentally,
have played in more different
bowls than any other school: nine.

Midget Basketball Practice Schedule Announced
The practice schedule for the
Midget Basketball program has
been revised as follows:
Gym open for 7th - Bth grade
boys, (shooting practice): 8:15 -
8:30.
7th-Bth grade practice, (boys):
8:30 - 9:45.

Famed Dr. Sam Sheppard To
Wrestle Here Saturday
Covington wrestling fans are
in for a real treat Saturday night
at the Fairgrounds Arena when
famed Dr. Sam Sheppard of Col
umbus, Ohio, makes his appear
ance in the local grappling ring.
Dr. Sheppard is one of a three
man tag team on the card lined
up by Promoter Corsica Jean.
Dr. Sam’s partners will be Buddy
Fuller and George Strickland.
Their opponents will be Paul
Demarco, Aldo Bogni and Vince
Lopez.
In high school and college,
Dr. Sam was a standout athlete

bers of the various Lions clubs
in Newton County. There are
four Lions Clubs in the county:
Covington, Oxford, Mansfield and
Almon.
The Oxford Club has been se
lected to build the float for the
1969 Peach Bowl Queen. Club
members wiH do the work on the
float and then drive it to Atlanta
prior to the day of the Peach
Parade.

Newton Teams Cop Openers

Both Newton County High
School basketball teams opened
the 1969-70 season with a bang
here Saturday night with impres
sive victories over the Jackson
High squads. The score of the
girls’ game was NCHS 43-26, and
the Rams count was 68-45.
The two main point-getters in
the initial tilt were Martha El
len Banks of Coach Tom Wort
man’s team with 25, and Forward
Bubba Hill for Coach Ronald
Bradley’s forces, also with 25
markers. Jackson’s Denise Da-

registered for the program on the
two registration dates and regis
tration is now closed.
All participants will be expect

shirts to practice. Basketball or
tennis shoes are required — no
street shoes will be allowed on
the gym floor. It is suggested
that shorts be worn, but this is
not required.

the NCHS gymnasium. During the
course of the Ram tilt, one of the
announcers commented that

school player I have ever seen.”

Champion Devils
The Red Devils football team,
1969 Midget League Champs in
Division 11, were honored at a
banquet on Thursday night at
7:30 p. m. at the Crest Restaurant.
Parents and cheerleaders also
attended.
Trophies were awarded to each
of the players. Coaches for the
Red Devils were Johnny Ham
monds and Steve Kelly. Mrs.
Jo Anglin was the cheerleader
director.
