Alabama Installs Dooley’s Play
One of the main reasons for Notre Dame taking a bowl bid this
year is the fact that the institution needs the $325,000 to pay on
their new sports complex ... Alabama had taken a page from Coach
Dooley’s play book. They installed the famed “flea flicker” play
that downed Alabama at Athens in 1965 . . . Every player on the
Newton High benches Saturday night saw action in the Newton-
Jackson eames (bovs and girls).
386 Boys In Junior League Football Here
Junior League football in Covington and Newton County blossom
ed this past season to a mushrooming program for young boys in
the sport. President of the league Clyde Webb said that 386 boys
were in the program, 126 cheerleaders and 30 coaches on the 11
teams. This is a grand total of 542 people engaged in this youth
activity. . .Ohio State, rated Number One in the wire services polls
all year long, finally bit the dust Saturday as Michigan downed the
Buckeyes 24-12. It was ironical that Atlanta Journal Sports Editor
Furman Bisher saw the game in person. Only last week he had writ
ten in his column that the OSU schedule was very weak, and that the
team hadn’t really beaten anyone except Purdue.
A Heisman Vote For Manning
The Heisman Trophy, emblematic of the finest college football
player in the country, is selected by publicity media throughout
the United States. Our vote this year went to (1) Archie Manning
of Ole Miss, (2) Steve Owen of Oklahoma, and (3) Mike Phipps of
Purdue. . .When Georgia and Tech square away Saturday in At
lanta both teams will have a common statistic: they both lost to
Auburn and Tennessee. But, the Bulldogs defeated Tulane and
Clemson, and those two clubs downed Georgia Tech ... Ohio
State draws the largest college football crowds in the US. yet they
say they are losing money. The stadium seats 85,000, but the stu
dent body of 43,000 takes up most of the space.
Cheerleader Selma Traded
When LSU turned down a major bowl bid Monday it wasn’t the
first time that a major school had turned thumbs down on an invi
tation. Pittsburgh turned down a Rose Bowl invitation in the
1930’s under the late Coach Jock Sutherland. Pitt had gone to the
Pasadena game the year before and they didn’t want to return.
And now Ohio State’s Woody Hayes wants two trips in a row...
Alabama and Coach Bear Bryant are going to the Liberty Bowl
in Memphis. It marks the 11th straight for the Bear.. .The Chi
cago Cubs cheerleader Dick Selma has been sold to Philadelphia
Phillies. Maybe he didn’t generate enough spirit?

The Church is God's appointed agency in this world for spreoding the knowledge of His love
for mon ond of His demond for mon to respond to Ihof love by loving his neighbor. Without
this grounding in the love of God, no government or society or woy of life will long
persevere and the freedoms which we hold so dear will inevitably perish. Therefore, even : :
from a selfish point of view, one should support the Church for the sake of the welfare X
of himself and his family. Beyond that, however, every person should uphold ond par
ticipate in the Church because it tells the truth obout man’s life, death and destiny; the IN^^"
truth which alone will set him free to live as a child of God.
