Holly Springs’ Polled
Herefords In Natl. Show
After an absence of 25 years, ’
the American Polled Hereford (
Association’s national show and i
sale is coming back to Georgia. ,
The 47th annual event will be \
held December 11-13 at South
eastern fairgrounds in Atlanta, <_
and it will be a far cry from
the one held cn that same site
October 18-21, 1944.
Estimated attendance at the
event next month is expected
to be around 5,000; only
400 persons attended in 1944.
There will be more cattle on
hand this year, too. In fact,
509 head will be shown, making
this the largest single-breed beef
cattle show in the world. Ninety
six herds from 27 states
and Canada will be represented.
They will be vying for $21,000
in premiums. Only 277 animals
competed 25 years ago.
Dr. O’Dell G. Daniel, head of
the animal science department,
University of Georgia Extension
Service, said ten Georgia herds
will be represented. These
include Colonial Hereford Farm
of Augusta, Dondebomar Farms
of Marietta, Green Acres Ranch
of Atlanta, J. D. Hadden and Sons
of Gibson, H. W. Herring Jr. of
Whigham, Holly Springs Farm of
Covington, Crestview Herefords

of Moultrie, and Singletary Farms
of Blakely.
Odell Gelvin, manager of
Ogeechee Farms, Fairland,
Okla., and Dr. Miles McKee,
professor of animal science,
Kansas State University, will
judge this year’s show.
Judging will begin at 8 a.m.
December 11, with the steers and
females competing first. Bulls
and group classes will be judged
December 12, beginning at 8 a.m.
It is expected that the national
grand champion bull will
be selected sometime between 12
noon and 1 p.m. on Friday. This
will be the climax of the entire
show.
The Marriott Motor Inn
in downtown Atlanta will be the
headquarters hotel, and the Polled
Hereford Association will hold its
annual meeting there at 3 p.m.
December 11.
The Polled Hereford sale is
scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Saturday, Dec. 13.

with it longer than that — the

The calculation is based on the
federal budget for fiscal 1970
which proposed outlays of $192.9

Chamber calculates it at $22.02
