2.7 million vaccines; eligibility expanded
More than 2.7 mil
lion vaccines have been
administered in Georgia
so far with eligibility for
the vaccine expanded
recently.
In Pike County there
have been a total of 1,1790
vaccinations administered
with 1,193 citizens getting
dose one and 597 citizens
getting dose two.
The Georgia Depart
ment of Public Health
(DPH) expanded its vac
cine eligibility March 15
to include adults aged 55
and older, individuals with
disabilities and certain
medical conditions.
Individuals with intel
lectual and developmental
disabilities are already eli
gible for vaccination. This
expansion now includes
disabilities caused by an
injury (e.g., traumatic
brain injury or spinal cord
injury), a disability due to
a longstanding condition
that could cause vision
loss, nerve damage or loss
of a limb, or a disability
due to illness such as ALS
or multiple sclerosis.
The medical condi
tions referenced include
asthma, cancer, cerebro
vascular disease, chronic
kidney disease, COPD,
cystic fibrosis, diabetes,
hypertension, heart condi
tions, immunocompro
mised state, liver disease,
neurologic conditions,
overweight and obesity,
pregnancy, pulmonary
fibrosis, sickle cell disease
and thalassemia.
To find a vaccine loca
tion or to schedule an
appointment, log on to
dph.georgia.gov/covid-
vaccine. For individuals
aged 16 and 17 who are in
an eligible population for
vaccination, Pfizer is the
only vaccine currently ap
proved for these ages.
Appointments can
be scheduled at CVS or
Walgreens or at one of the
GEMA mass vaccination
sites for the Pfizer vaccine.
According to the CDC,
the World Health Organi
zation first declared C0-
VID-19 a global pandemic
on March 11, 2020.
“In one year, we have
lost over 520,000 Ameri
cans to #COVlD19 - our
loved ones, friends, and
neighbors. We grieve
these losses and now
must intensify our efforts,
so they were not in vain.
One year ago, we were
hopeless, but now we
have hope. Together, our
strength and conviction
will guide us to the end
of this pandemic,” said
CDC director Dr. Rochelle
Walensky.
