Concord has first internet customers
BY DWAIN W. PENN
news@pikecountygeorgia.com
As of the March 9
Concord council meeting,
there were 12 internet
customers involved with
the innovative experi
ment, all with a line of
sight to the water tank.
More customers are
added each day, a mix of
tank and non-tank visu
als.
Some customers were
experiencing problems
attributed to foliage. The
transition from winter to
spring has only fruit and
ornamental trees leafing
out. The large and hardy
deciduous trees’ slight
greening has yet to test
the mettle of broadband
transmission.
Ideas were suggested
and considered, even
a comment about the
prevalence of problems
in other cities caused
by topography. One
asked about renting
power poles to “pop”
signals from customer
to customer which may
increase service rates.
Upon learning about
an offer, council ap
proved to establish a
contract agreement with
a Strickland Road resi
dent for use of his tower
to help expand service.
The only cost will be tow
er equipment since the
resident requested free
internet service in lieu of
leasing the tower.
As the city infrastruc
ture of internet service
grows, decisions will
be made as to different
packages, selections and
related fees for custom
ers inside and outside
the city.
COUNCIL ALSO:
• Informally approved
the use of the field by the
Strickland building for
a car show on Saturday,
April 17, a fundraiser
hosted by Red Clay
Ministries. The minis
try serves the needs of
inmates throughout the
many Georgia correc
tional facilities and their
family members.
• Heard that although
the cost of $25,000 was
recently achieved for
renovating city hall, a
few minor jobs remain
to push the total slightly
higher. They include
kitchen cabinets and
expanding the council
chamber.
• Agreed with Strick
land recognizing Dalton
Thiel’s attendance at the
meeting and expressing
thanks for his hard work
in city hall along with
vital efforts of Doug and
Anita Neath.
• Received a brief
water report from Neath:
4.39% water loss, a minor
leak on Hilltop and a
sewer clog along the
west end of GA 18.
• Approved to move
$40,000 from the city’s
capital fund to the new
Concord Wireless In
ternet bank account to
refund the general fund
loan and pay internet
related bills.
