The Dog and Pony
Show recently opened
with an artist’s reception
at A Novel Experience
with proceeds from the
show going to Coco’s
Cupboard.
The Dog and Pony
photography show will
be on display throughout
the month of May at the
bookstore.
“I’m an animal per
son - a dog guy. Some of
the photos just reach
out and grab you. That’s
what they are supposed
to do. Some make you
laugh and some make
you cry. It runs the
gambit of it all,” said Dog
and Pony Show juror Ray
Sullivan.
“It’s all subjective
and in the eye of the
beholder. In my personal
work, I’m not the perfec
tionist photographer by
any means. 1 go more for
emotion and capturing
the moment.”
During the artist re
ception and debut of the
show, he explained his
reasons for selecting the
first, second and third
winners. First place went
to “Birth” by Shannon
Johnstone.
“1 have never seen
dog-birth photography.
It’s powerful. I love the
depth of field, it’s a clas
sic shot. The little puppy
is right there and mom is
licking the puppy. It’s so
simple and a classic shot.
We usually get happy or
sad photos in the show
but this one is just so
extraordinary because of
the subject matter.”
He said he selected
the second place photo
“Inquistive” by Jo Fields
because he “liked the
sharpness of the photo
and the background. It’s
classic portraiture.”
Third place went to
“Spazz at PAWS Atlanta”
by Fred Strobel.
“The back lighting and
focus is spectacular,”
said Sullivan. “You see
everything in his eyes.
When making studio or
film photography, you’re
always looking for the
rim, always trying to put
an edge on things. This
was a rescue dog.”
Honorable mention
ribbons were awarded to
several photographers,
including Jim Johns with
“Out for a Ride,” Mal-
gorzata Florkowska with
“In Full Speed,” Karey
Walter with “Horse Skull
on Cumberland Island”
and Fori Kolbenschlag
with “Wasn’t Me.”
Surround Yourself With Jesus
“Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his face con
tinually.” I Chronicles 16:11
We live in a sin sick world. There has been sin ever since the fall of man,
Adam and Eve in the garden. But, sin is becoming more and more prevalent
every day. There’s such evil taking place everywhere we turn. Our world is
on life support and it’s failing fast. It breaks the hearts of many Christians.
The world seems to be taking Jesus and good wholesomeness out more and
more.
I think as individuals it’s more important than ever to fill our hearts and
lives with the things of the Lord. Let the decor in our home be Christlike,
maybe have pictures of Jesus on our walls or hangings of scriptures. Let the
sounds of gospel and good wholesome music fills our homes. Take the Bible
off the shelf and get it into our hearts. Wear Christian t-shirts. For entertain
ment watch good wholesome TV shows, play a game with the kids, go visit a
friend who could use some cheering up.
Fill your heart and live with Jesus, each and every day. Your spirits will
be lifted, because Jesus always brings hope. You’ll see that just as the Bible
says, we’re in the world, but we’re not of the world. written by, Macheiie McCoy

BUDGET: First hearing approved
FROM PAGE ONE
The 5% retirement that
was figured in the budget
was only for the employ
ees who participate in
the retirement plan now.
Commissioner James
Jenkins noted if the
retirement must be
changed this year, then
maybe next year it can
be increased a little and
so on to get it to where
it needs to be. If more
employees elect to par
ticipate in the retirement,
that will have to be fig
ured in the budget. Com
missioner Daniel asked if
the figures in the budget
were based on Cigna
insurance. CM Rogers
replied yes, the county
is waiting on two more
insurance companies
to submit their quote
but as of now Cigna has
no increase. Commis
sioner Jenkins asked if
the recreation depart
ment budget has been
changed. Rogers said the
recreation department
has not been changed.
County Manager Rogers
said the sheriff’s office
made a change that will
take place the next pay
period.
Rogers said the budget
will be extremely close to
a zero increase this year.
Commissioner Proctor
asked what the final bud
get number is in the pro
posed budget. CM Rogers
stated FMIG is included
in the budget this year
which makes the budget
look like a big increase.
Fast year the budget
did not include FMIG,
Jail Fund, etc. and it was
$12,269,000. This year
the FMIG and jail fund is
included in the budget
and is $14,000,000. Com
missioner Daniel said in
the proposed budget the
general fund recommend
ed was $12,619,592 and
he would like to know
what the number is cur
rently. County Manager
Rogers said the general
fund is about $400,000
more than the proposed
budget.
