Morgan Oskey is 8th
in nation on beam
PCMS student and
Legion of All Star
gymnast Morgan Oskey
qualified for the
Region 8 Xcel Re
gion Champion
ship which was
held April 30
through May 2
which featured
top gym
nasts from
Georgia,
Tennessee,
Alabama,
Florida,
Missis
sippi,
Louisiana,
South
Carolina
and North
Carolina.
Morgan
medalled in
the top 10 on floor, bars
and all around with a
38.25.
She scored an
almost-perfect score of
9.25 on beam, making
her the 2021 Region 8
Xcel Silver, first place
Beam Champion. She is
currently ranked eighth
on America’s Top 100
for beam.
She practices at
Legion of All Stars in
Griffin for 16 hours a
week and is coached
by Lyndsie Ford,
Pam Gasaway
and Teagan
Brown.
“We can’t

Legion
coaching
staff, her
teammates
and their
parents enough
for all the love
and support they
have given her this
season,” said Tara
Oskey. “When Morgan
is not on the gym floor,
she is on the football
field cheering on our
favorite Pirates as a
member of the PCMS
cheer team.”

RSGA golf earns third
in state championship
The Rock Springs
Christian Academy Mid
dle School Golf Team
finished third in the
Middle School GAPPS
Championship on April
13 held at Heron Bay
Golf and Country Club.
Kolby Pounds won
the Individual State
Championship with the
lowest score of 40. Golf
team members include
Ethan Eads, Ashton Ab
ernathy, Kolby Pounds,
Jeremy Cleveland, Eyan
Eads, Bryce Jordan.

Two PCHS track athletes sign scholarships
Pike County High
School track and field
standouts Tayla More
land and Taylor Hampton
recently signed athletic
scholarships with Ken
nesaw State University,
which is a Division 1
University.
Tayla holds the PCHS
school record in the Long
Jump at 19’ 9”.
Taylor also jumped
over 19’ in the long jump
but she holds the school
record in the triple jump
at 37’ 8 1/2”.
Tayla also holds the
school record in the
100m hurdles at 14.88.
Maggie Nauck earns PCREA scholarship; will
play softball for Anderson University in S.C.

sociation Scholarship by
president Mike Beres.
Principal Kevin Huff
stetler noted that Maggie
is an outstanding student
at Pike County High
School. She has main
tained a 4.0 GPA and has
excelled at many sports,
including soccer and
softball.
Maggie will be attend
ing Anderson University
in South Carolina on a
full softball scholarship.
She plans to pursue a
degree in elementary
education and become a
teacher like her parents
who have been Maggie’s
inspiration.
She said she witnessed
the love her parents
have for their students
and she wants to be an
inspiration in other’s
lives. She hopes that part
of her career will involve
being a P.E. teacher and
she plans to coach a soft-
ball team one day.
“We congratulate Mag
gie on all of her achieve
ments now and in the
future,” said Beres.

Pirates football team pushes hard at weight lifting combine

The Pike County
Pirates football team
held their annual weight
lifting meet and combine
recently.
The players competed
in the 40 yard dash, verti
cal jump, broad jump,
20 yard shuttle, power
clean, dead lift, squat and
bench press. The players
were divided into weight
classes and compete
with each other in speed/
agility and weight lifting
events.
“The team has worked
very hard since the end
of last season in prepa
ration for the upcom
ing season. This was a
chance for the players
to showcase their hard
work and skill,” said
Pirates head coach Brad
Webber. “The competi
tive talent was evident
as there were multiple
champions in the differ
ent events.”
Jakilen King was
clocked as fastest in the
40 yard dash with a time
of 4.5 seconds. Trent
Lackey was clocked as
fastest in the 20 yard
shuttle with a time of
4.26 seconds, with Wyatt
Cochran posting 4.27
seconds. Blayne Patter
son soared with a 9’3”
broad jump, with Q Har
ris jumping 9’1”. Jacob
Hammond championed
the vertical jump with
31’ while Trent Lackey
jumped 30”.
The Top Power Clean
was by Brayden Pilken
ton with a lift of 245 lbs,
while Caleb Greene and
Brody Sullivan drove
up 240 pounds. The
Top Bench press was
by Kevin Godwin with a
lift of 300 lbs, as Lautic
Fordham threatened with
285 lbs. The top dead
lift was earned by Caleb
Greene with a lift of 500
lbs, followed by Jakilen
King with a lift of 465 lbs.
The top squatters were
Caleb Greene, Brayden
Pilkenton both with a lift
of 4751bs. The Pirates
had 12 members in the
1,000 lb club this year,
including Caleb Greene
at 1,240 lbs, Brayden
Pilkenton at 1,150 lbs,
Andrew Hood at 1,140
lbs, Jakilen King at 1,130
lbs, Jackson Jeffcoat at
1,095 lbs, Jake Gilpin at
1,085, Bailey Powers at
1,065 lbs, Lautic Fordham
at 1,025 lbs, Michael Mat
thews at 1,010 lbs and
Tony Harper, Isacc Ison
and Jack Barron with
1000 lbs each.
The top 5 pound per
pound lifters were Dalton
Gales who lifted 6.63
lbs per pound of body
weight, Trent Lackey
with 6.1 lbs, Cameron
Tuggle with 6.08, Jakilen
King with 5.95 lbs and
Jack Barron with 5.95 lbs.
The Pirates compete
in an Iron Pirate award
where the lifters get
points for each of the
eight events. In the clos
est race ever, the top
Iron Pirates were Caleb
Greene with 36 points,
followed by Jakilen King
35.25, Trent Lackey
35, Wyatt Cochran 34,
Brayden Pilkenton 29.5
and Blayne Patterson
26.5. The top Pirates
were Caleb Greene with
most points, most weight
lifted at 1,480 lbs and
Dalton Gales earned the
top lb/lb award by lifting
6.63 pounds per pound of
body weight.
“1 am extremely proud
of our student athletes
and the amount of time,
dedication, and commit
ment they have put into
our program,” said coach
Webber.
“The dedication of
our coaching staff, along
with the support of PCHS
administration and com
munity has motivated
these young men to grow
and compete in athlet
ics. Pike County School
athletes displayed their
work ethic and desire to
day and began laying the
foundation of the 2021
football season.”
The Pirates started
spring football practice
May 10 and played the
Red/White game May 21.
