Bob Clark of Meansville has owned and operated B&D Ceramics since 1985 and recently
sold the business to his son Brian Clark. The shop has more than 14,000 molds and there
is something for everyone to enjoy. They even have customers in seven different states.
Legacies left through ceramics
With more than 16,000 molds, B&D Ceramics in Meansville
has something for everyone. The shop is open from 10 a.m
to 3 p.m. each Saturday and during the evening by request.
B&D Ceramics in
Meansville is continuing
the legacy of Wanola’s
Ceramics and other
ceramics shops which
date back to 1945 in
Nebraska and their
ceramics legacy is now
continuing through new
owners. The family busi
ness was recently sold
by Bob Clark of Means
ville to his son Brian
Clark and is operated by
Tina Ackiss.
His mom Wanola
and dad Earl took over
their aunt and uncle’s
ceramics shop in 1967
in Nebraska, the same
year Bob left for the U.S.
Navy and he was later
stationed in Cuba.
“They started do
ing it as a hobby and
the next thing they
knew, they had a full
ceramics shop,” said
Bob. “Earl quit farm
ing to work full time in
the shop and when he
and his wife Wanola
retired, they planned
to sell their more than
2,000 molds and three
kilns, but my wife and
1 decided to buy the
business in April 1985.1
love this place and I’ve
loved ceramics since 1
was a little boy and my
mom would let us paint
ceramics.”
The ceramic molds
are filled with slip which
is a liquid mixture that
turns into bisque when
fired once at 1,975
degrees. The bisque can
be painted either with
glaze or acrylic paints
which are available at
B&Ds and then they can
be fired again to create
a stronger piece.
“Slip is a mixture
talc, clay and chemicals
all blended together
to make the liquid that
ceramics are made of,”
said Brian Clark.
Dixie Slip was pur
chased from Peggy and
Jerry Hopper in Hape-
ville in 2006.
“They were our sup
plier, and they were
retiring,” said Brian.

The Pike County 6U
All Stars may be young,
but they are tough and
determined athletes al
ready. The baseball team
traveled all the way to
New Orleans, Louisiana
to compete in the World
Series and brought home
second place after play
ing 10 tough games.
“The boys handled
the pressure extremely
well - a lot better than
us coaches and parents,
that’s for sure. They
played great defense,
especially for 6 year
olds, holding most teams
to single digit runs. I’m
extremely proud of the
improvements these
kids made from the first
tournament we played
until this last one,” said
coach Joshua Rice. “They
played with their hearts
and gave everything
they had. As a coach you
can’t ask for more than
that. Overall, we won two
tournaments and placed
second in two tourna
ments, only losing five
games total and three of
those losses came from
the team that won our
state tournament and the
World Series. Also as for
our parents and fans they
were like no other. They
showed up to every tour
nament and were con
stantly supporting those
boys and were enjoying
the games and creating
an atmosphere those
boys will never forget.”
During the World Series
tournament, the 6U All
Star Team was undefeated
in pool play at 4-0 and had
an 8-2 overall record.
“To get to the champi
onship game we beat the
Louisiana state champs
in the quarterfinals 13-9
and we beat the Texas
state champs in the
semifinals 22-19 in extra
innings. We lost to West
Walton who were the
Georgia State Champs
by a score of 14-8 in the
championship game.”
The team was sup
ported by many in the
community, including
these sponsors: Middle
Ga. Fleet Services, Christ
Chapel, United Bank,
Hunts Outdoor Services,
English Law Group,
Rapid P.D., BJs Bottle
Shop, Andrew Duffey at
Countryside Chrysler,
American Pie Pizza in Ze-
bulon, McLeRoy Grading
Division, Bufords Metal
Fabrication, Pike Pools
and Tri Copy.
