Molena council swears in two new members
BY DWAIN W. PENN
news@pikecountygeorgia.com
Molena mayor Joyce
Corley and three members
of council witnessed the
swearing in of two new
council members Andrea
Ashby and Luis Vazquez at
the June 14 meeting.
City court judge David
Fowler administered the
oaths of office for both.
Ashby fills the long vacant
seat of post 3, previously
held by Elise Anthony.
Vazquez takes over in post
4 following a notice of
resignation by Glenn Beck
ham, recently accepted by
council.
During public comments,
two topics were addressed
involving development of
a five acre GA18 property
and needs of the county
fire department.
“The city ordinance
needs to be checked to
ensure square footage
requirements are met,”
said Corley in response to
the GA18 property owner’s
plan to put a 950 s.f. Class
A home on the land. “Pend
ing that outcome, there will
be no issue for approval.
The health department will
be contacted to acquire
approval and a permit to
install a septic system.”
The fire department is
having problems with sev
eral doors in the station.
Upon receiving a previous
notice, city clerk Tina Lee
contacted contractors
seeking bids for repairs but
has received no responses.
It was noted that previ
ous fire employees may
be able to offer advice on
the situation in pursuing a
successful course of action.
Station records indicate
some doors have not been
serviced in years perhaps
creating legal problems.
COUNCIL ALSO:
• Heard as of June 14 the
city has five internet cus
tomers with another five
expected within a week.
• Approved the acquisi
tion of an internet checking
account which will docu
ment the current assess
ment that the project is
over budget. However as
more customers are added,
rising income will soon bal
ance out expenses. Rapid
growth may also allow the
city to consider a discount
plan plus an optional plan
for businesses.
• Approved to change
the status of public works
employee Steven Patillo to
full time during the summer.
• Heard the city has
created a list of engineers
from which a choice will
be made to contract with
for water system improve
ments and repairs as
needed.
• Learned that owners of
blighted (nuisance) prop
erties will soon receive a
letter requesting improve
ment of property found in
violation of city ordinance.
• Approved the pur
chase of an external hard
drive for police department
as an attachment to the
Explorer laptop.

Speak Life
“Death and life are in the power of
the tongue.” Proverbs 18:21
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words
will never harm me! We all have heard or maybe
quoted this phrase when we were children. The prob
lem with this phrase is the fact that words really do
matter.
Scripture commands us to not use words lightly, but
to make sure that they reflect the God we serve.
My prayer today is that the words I say demonstrate
the character of the God I serve!
