The photographic sto
rytelling of Neil McGahee
was on display at A Novel
Experience in June and
an artist reception was
held for his show In Ordi
nary Time: A Collection
of Photographs of the
People of the Southeast
ern United States.
“My work as a pho
tojournalist covered so
many unpleasant things,
like war and famine in
Central America, Africa
and Eastern Europe and
1 saw so many people
at their very worst. So
this work is a fall back,
showing that there is
still goodness in the
world and a positive side
of humanity. 1 enjoyed
meeting and talking to
people at the reception
and seeing their reac
tions to my work. It was a
wonderful experience at
this unique bookstore, an
enlightening and validat
ing experience. 1 grew up
in this area and it was
like coming home,” said
McGahee.
McGahee also serves
as the editor of the
Cordele Dispatch in
Cordele, Georgia.
“We were thrilled to
present the work of Neil -
originally scheduled for a
year ago! Neil is a cel
ebrated photojournalist
who has roamed the globe
covering ‘a lot of unsa
vory stuff.’ He has been
nominated for the Pulitzer
Prize three times and was
runner up in 1977,” said
Chris Curry of ANE. “For
this show, Neil presented
a glimpse of ‘ordinary
people living ordinary
lives under ordinary cir
cumstances - their poetic
faces offering dignity to a
chaotic world.’”
Pictured during an artist’s reception are (l-r) Susan Butler, Neil
McGahee, Sherry Hilley, Benny Hilley and Karen Lacey.

Encourage Someone
“Some people make cutting re
marks, but the words of the wise
bring healing” Proverbs 12:18
I’ve never been around a critical person
and walked away and said, “Wow, I sure
want to be like them.”
You have no idea how a word that cuts
can break a person and you have no idea
how a simple word of encouragement can
lift someone up! Written by Billy Smith
