American Legion Post 197 presents annual awards
PHOTOS BY JOHN ELLIS
At left, John Ellis (left) is presented with a certificate of appreciation for his help with the Ameri
can Legion Post 197. He has been a continuous member of the post for 10 years. Above, Post
volunteers are honored during the annual awards ceremony.
The annual Pike
County American Legion
Post 197 Family awards
ceremony was held
recently as many local
leaders and volunteers
were recognized for their
efforts.
American Legion
continuous members
were honored including
15-year recipients George
Andrews, Arthur French,
Walter Maxwell, Patrick
Patten and Lewis Tal-
lant; 10-year recipients
John Ellis and James
Gaulding; and five-year
recipients Ewell Bell,
Paul Chatterton, Kenneth
Noble, Darryl Segraves,
Chris Wheeler and James
Wilson.
Those who received
certificates of apprecia
tion included John Ellis,
Moody-Daniel Funeral
Home, Georgia Depart
ment of Motor Vehicles
- Zebulon - Doug Mor
ris, U.S. Army Recruit
ing Command, Becky
Watts, Millie Smith, The
Narrow Path Ministries
and senior bishop Bart
Brock, senior pastor Fred
Thompson of Mount
Gilead Baptist Church,
Nicole Tillery of Village
Photography, Goggans
Florist, Steven Yerkes
and Brenda Runyon.
Stefan Huckaby was
honored as Volunteer
of the Year. Two candi
dates were selected as
Co-Volunteers of the Year
- Stephen Golias and Jeff
Sheriff.
Honorable Mentions
for the Volunteer of the
Year included Paul Chat
terton, Melissa Patten,
Jason Patten and Matt
Germain.
The Legion Family of
the Year was the Patten
Family.
The Co-Legionnaires
of the Year were Paul
Chatterton and Jeff
Sheriff.
“John Ellis, amaz
ingly, is a Korean War
era veteran. And even
more amazing is that he
still actively supports
many of our community
activities over the years
that 1 have been in com
mand. He takes dozens
of quality photos of the
Legion Family events he
covers, sends them to
me for Post 197 and then
drafts up the article for
the Pike County Journal
Reporter. The Legion
Family needs all the pro
motion and advertising
that it can get and John
does a great job doing
this for us. 1 also add
selected photos for the
Post 197 Annual History
Report and articles for
our annual Consolidated
Post Report. Again, John
helps make my job much
easier with the support
he provides the Legion
Family,” said former Post
197 commander Bryan
Richardson during the
presentation of awards.
“Millie has supported
our past programs over
the years by singing for
us at our community pa
triotic events. I first saw
her sing at our Legion
Family Four Chaplains
Program about two to
three years ago. Since
then, she has been a
regular part of our com
munity programs. Every
time we needed a singer,
she has always been
available, even at the
last minute. Her under
standing and admiration
for veterans is mature
and astute for a person
of her young age. It is
comforting knowing that
veterans are respected
and admired within our
youth. Millie is now in
ninth grade. We would
be very honored if Millie
at end of her eleventh
grade year would rep
resent us at the Georgia
Girls State Session which
is a tremendous indi
vidual developmental life
experience.”

QBITUAREE
Dee Parrott Jerry Colwell
Dianne Carter Parrott might have been her legal
name, but she was much better known as “Mama
Dee” to her loving husband Greg, “Mom” to her two
sons Matt and Blake, “Non-
nie” to her grandbabies
Irie, Grayson, and Oakes,
but most people knew her
as “Miss Dee.” She lived
for putting smiles on the
faces of anyone she met
and that made them feel
like family. Her biggest joys
were being at the ball field
with her boys, Fresh Air
, — - Friday’s with her Big Daddy
V and enjoying a Christmas
Hallmark movie, regardless
if the plots were the same.
Dee isn’t survived by anyone, she won the race!
Instead, she is up in Heaven preparing one amazing
meal with her Mom for the rest of us down here. This
includes her husband Greg Parrott, son Matt Still (and
his wife Ginny), son Blake Parrott, sisters Debora
Avery, Cheryl Casarow, Kerrie Monti, and Terry Ivie,
father Dave Englett, and many, many friends.
A service to celebrate Dee’s life will be held on
Saturday, August 14 at 2 p.m. at Christ Chapel Com
munity Church in Zebulon. Pastor Billy Smith will
officiate.
The family will greet guests after the service at the
church.
Moody-Daniel Funeral Home is assisting the family
with arrangements.
CHURCH BULLETINS
Pine Mountain Holiness Church: Monthly food
bank every third Saturday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A short
application must be filled out for first time patrons.
Open to anybody.
