Meansville council asks for citizens'
help to prevent vandalism in city
BY DWAIN W. PENN
dwain@pikecountygeorgia.com
“Please stop trashing
our walking track and
park” was the courte
ous consensus at the
September 13 Meansville
council meeting. A plan
of reaction was devised,
analyzed and will be
pursued in an attempt
to reduce or eliminate
senseless acts of vandal
ism.
It is an ongoing pat
tern for nearby residents
to visit the walking track
to find generic litter
of paper, cans, bottles
and cigarette butts plus
another salacious item of
used prophylactics in a
remote lower end.
Over the Labor Day
weekend, someone or
a group of two or more
expressed their don’t
care opinion of the park
by relocating a heavy
bench, pulling up the
Thaddeus Nelson memo
rial sign and wrapped
swings around the posts
of the frame.
When the Tic-tac-toe
game was recently dam
aged, that went beyond
juvenile mischief and
became a misdemeanor
of vandalism, punishable
by law.
A suggestion was
made to contact the
sheriff’s office to see if a
deputy on patrol, when
nearby, could ride by
to check for violations.
A sign states the park
is closed 10 p.m. to 7
a.m. but vehicles have
been observed parked
overnight at the lower
end. When violations
are observed by local
residents, evidence is
recorded digitally to help
determine perpetrators
and where they come
from.
Solutions considered
include installation of a
camera and surveillance
sign, gate the property,
divide the parking area
limiting access to lover’s
lane and pay someone to
pick up litter.
A list of ideas was ap
proved to move forward
in solving the walking
track and park problems.
Use the city Facebook
page to inform citizens
and solicit help, look into
a contract with sheriff’s
office for further patrols
beyond occasional visits,
utilize the community
service detail through
the county court and
pay for regular park
clean-ups, and install a
concealed digital camera
and applicable warning
sign to capture evidence
of future violations and
vandalism.
Council members
noted that together, lo
cal residents can bring
back the ambience of a
tidy, decent and tranquil
“little town with a big
heart.”
COUNCIL ALSO:
• Approved use of city
hall meeting room for
fire training classes, the
repair of the fire truck
fuel tank for less than
$3,000 and heard the
station responded to six
fire calls and nine medi
cal calls in the county
and two medical calls in
the city.
• Extended the dead
line to October 8 for
sealed bids on city hall
railings and roof repairs.
• Agreed to contact
the county on damaged
Means Street pavement
repair.

FOOTBALL: Program
celebrates 50 years
FROM PAGE ONE
“Football games are
where we recognize
people’s accomplish
ments such as when
we presented the state
championship rings for
the baseball team. It’s
also a place where we
show support for mem
bers of the community -
usually by having honor
ary captains flip the coin
toss to start the game.”
When the football
program started in the
fall of 1971, the Pirates
played other JV teams
because they were such
a young team and in the
fall of 1972, they played a
full varsity schedule. At
the Sept. 24 game, sev
eral team members from
the first game served as
honorary captains.
“The football facility and
program have changed a
lot since 1971. In 2016, the
stadium was upgraded
and now it’s a first class
facility,” said Stanford.
“We have a lot of
supporters who have
YEARS DF
FOOTBALL
been behind the team
since the start and many
of them come to every
game. The Pirates are
blessed with tremendous
support and our team
has a fan support at away
games better than most
teams, especially in AAA.
When we go to stadiums
as the visitors, we fill
the visiting stands and
sometimes outnumber
the home team’s fans.”
For the first football
game of the 2021 season,
Randy Cook, a member
of the first Pirates team
who scored the first
touchdown as a varsity
player, flipped the coin
to start the game and the
historic season for the
Pirates.
Former Pirates foot
ball players who will be
honored include Audie
Ingram, Garry Shackel
ford, Dennis Watkins,
Randy Millwood, Ricky
