Lady Pirates host first round of Sweet 16 Oct. 20

The Lady Pirates
blasted their way to the
Sweet 16 by defeating
Burke County in back-to-
back games Wednesday,
Oct. 13.
The Lady Pirates will
host the Oconee County
Lady Warriors in the first
round of Sweet 16 play
at Lady Pirate Field on
Wednesday, Oct. 20 with
games set for 4:30 p.m.
and 6:30 p.m.
“We need you all to
come out and support
these ladies against a
very strong Lady War
riors squad,” said head
coach Kevin Mobley. “It
should be a fun and excit
ing series. Make plans to
be there!”
In the first game of
their Oct. 13 double
header, Burke County
scored their first run in
the first inning but the
Lady Pirates answered
back in an explosive third
inning as they added five
runs to the board. They
stayed strong offensively
for the rest of the game,
adding four more runs in
the fourth and four in the
fifth. Bailee Brown, Emma
Smith, Shelby Duncan,
Alana Crenshaw and
Lily Alpough all had two
hits for the Lady Pirates.
Alana Crenshaw hit a
homerun and a double
and picked up four RBI in
the victory. Jamie Corbin
picked up the win as she
pitched all five innings,
allowing five runs on
five hits and striking out
three.
In the second game of
the playoffs, the Lady Pi
rates shut out Burke 8-0
as Haley Perkins pitched
all five innings, allowing
only two hits and no runs
while striking out five
and walking none. Callie
Williams led the team
offensively as she went
2-for-2 at the plate with a
double and two RBls.
The PCHS Pirates foot
ball team defeated the
Morrow Mustangs 31-26
last Friday as seniors on
the team were honored
as well as members of
the first Pirates football
teams from 1971 and
1972.
The Pirates received
the ball to start the game
and took advantage of
the opportunity as they
marched down the field
and chewed up time until
#30 Jakilen King scored
a 10-yard rushing touch
down with a successful
PAT by Ozzie O’Steen to
make the score 7-0 with
6 minutes left in the first
quarter. The Pirates held
Morrow on downs but
then fumbled the ball at
their own 32-yard line
and the Mustangs scored
to make it 7-7 with one
minute left in the first
quarter.
In the second quarter,
#49 Jacob Levin picked
up a big sack against the
Mustangs and shortly
after, #15 Lautic Fordham
intercepted a Morrow
pass at the Mustangs’ 10-
yard line. Ozzie O’Steen
kicked a nine-yard field
goal to make the score
10-7 Pirates at half time.
After the half, the
Mustangs scored with 9
minutes left in the third
quarter to make the
score 14-10. The Pirates
picked up a big kickoff
return as #8 Cameron
Tuggle ran the ball to
Morrow’s 42-yard line.
Jakilen King scored a
six-yard rushing touch
down and Ozzie O’Steen
hit the PAT to make the
score Pirates 17, Mus
tangs 14. The Mustangs
scored a rushing TD on
their next possession but
missed the PAT, moving
the score to Mustangs 20,
Pirates 17.
With one minute to
go in the third quarter,

the 38-yard line. With 11
minutes left in the third
quarter, #40 Rylee Gor
don picked up a rushing
TD for the Pirates to give
them the 24-20 lead after
O’Steen hit the PAT.
With 8 minutes left
in the fourth quarter,
Cameron Tuggle inter
cepted a Mustangs pass.
Pike turned the ball over
on downs at the Mus
tangs 39-yard line but #9
Harrison Edge recovered
a fumble to get the ball
back.
With minutes left in
the game, Jakilen King
picked up his third
rushing touchdown and
O’Steen added the extra
point to make it 31-20
Pirates. The Mustangs
picked up a last minute
rushing TD but failed to
make the two-point con
version and the Pirates
picked up the 31-26 win.
This Friday, the
Pirates will clash with
the Central Chargers of
Macon in a AAA Region
2 match as they attempt
to improve their 2-5 sea
son record.

COVID-19: Deaths rise,

tem as of Oct. 7 accord
ing to pike.kl2.ga.us.
Students returned to
school this week after fall
break so updated num
bers have not yet been
posted.
More than 10.8 million
Georgia residents have
received the COVID-19
vaccine with more than
half a million residents
fully vaccinated at 55% of
the population.
In Pike, 33% of resi
dents are fully vaccinated
as of Oct. 18 at 6,044
vaccinated citizens and
36% of residents having
at least one dose of the
vaccine.
