STEM Challenge

for elementary schools
Georgia elementary
classes in third through
fifth grades are being
challenged to put their
science, technology, engi
neering and math (STEM)
skills to work to explore
the role healthy forests
play in creating healthy
communities by protect
ing our air, soil and water
resources.
Elementary teachers
and their students may
enter the fall ’21 Healthy
Forests, Healthy Com
munities STEM Challenge
by Nov. 12 for the chance
to win a prize package
totaling $350 for their
class. The top grade win
ner from the third, fourth
and fifth grade entries will
each win a prize package.
The winners will be an
nounced later in Novem
ber.
The Georgia Asso
ciation of Conservation
Districts (GACD), a non
profit organization that
works with the state’s Soil
and Water Conservation
Districts to promote the
conservation of natural
resources, is sponsoring
the statewide competi
tion, which is being co
ordinated by the Georgia
Ag Experience (GAE) and
Georgia Foundation for
Agriculture (GFA).
Teachers interested
in participating in the
Healthy Forests, Healthy
Communities STEM Chal
lenge may visit gfb.ag/
stemchallenge for more
information and to regis
ter for the program. Once
teachers register their
class, they will receive ac
cess to a digital resource
toolkit that equips the
class for participating
in the Healthy Forests,
Healthy Communities
STEM challenge.
“The Georgia Associa
tion of Conservation Dis
tricts is excited to partner
with the Georgia Founda
tion for Agriculture on its
second statewide STEM
Challenge,” said GACD Ex
ecutive Director Katie Sp-
onberger. “This challenge,
which focuses on the
importance of forests, will
help students understand
and appreciate Georgia’s
diverse natural resources
and learn how to con
serve those resources for
future generations.”
Each participating
class is being asked to
explore products we use
every day that are made
from trees and how tree
farmers grow a sustain
able crop.
The GACD is also
holding its annual poster
contest this fall with the
theme of “Healthy For
ests, Healthy Communi
ties.” Schools that submit
their STEM Challenge
entries by Nov. 1 and
indicate they wish to be
considered for the annual
GACD Poster Contest will
also be considered for the
prizes that contest offers.

Georgia Foundation for
Agriculture STEM chal
lenge as a way to connect
elementary students to
Georgia agriculture. Every
year students will have a
new opportunity to solve
a real world ag problem
with a different commu
nity partner” said GFA
Executive Director Lily
Baucom.
The purpose of the
challenge is to encourage
elementary teachers and
students in grades 3-5 to
explore aspects of Geor
gia agriculture by apply
ing their STEM skills to
solve real-world problems
that farmers face in pro
ducing our food and fiber.
The Georgia Ag Experi
ence/Georgia Foundation
for Agriculture STEM
Challenge is designed to
be a bi-annual competi
tion with a spring and fall
contest. The GACD is the
2021 challenge sponsor.
The GAE is a mobile
classroom, created by
the GFA, that is housed
in a 36-foot trailer, to
give third through fifth-
grade students and the
public a chance to visit
a poultry house, cattle
pasture, stand of timber,
horticulture nursery, a
produce stand full of fresh
Georgia fruit, vegetables
and pecans, cotton and
peanut fields. Colorful
farm photos, interactive
technology and displays
of products made from
the various ag commodi
ties highlight the impor
tance of Georgia agricul
ture to our daily lives. All
exhibits and lessons that
are part of the GAE mo
bile classroom have been
professionally designed
to meet STEM curriculum
standards.
The Georgia Ag Ex
perience began visiting
schools in South Georgia
in January with plans to
travel across the state by
the end of the year. For

deadline is Nov. 12. The

organizations, targeting
students in third through
fifth grades. The Georgia
Ag Experience uses tech

so students can take a
deep-dive into seven dif
ferent Georgia agricultural
commodities.

in Peachtree City. Dr.
Moore practices family

WANTED: Automation Controls Technician
Job Title: Automation Controls Technician Department: Maintenance
Reports To: Maintenance Manager
Position Summary: We are seeking a self-motivated candidate to manage essential main
tenance activities and provide automation controls support to a highly automated and fast
paced lumber mill facility. The qualified candidate should understand basics of industrial
facilities and have strong problem solving and trouble shooting skills with a strong back
ground in electrical and industrial controls. The position will require experience with the
latest versions of the Allen Bradley family of PLC’s, VFD’s and HMI’s/OIT’s to be used in
conjunction with a strong understanding of electrical controls systems, mechanical drives,
pneumatics, hydraulics, PC’s, and Controls networks.
Key Job Responsibilities:
• Manage essential maintenance activities.
• Provide expertise using all Rockwell Automation software packages and others as needed
• Have experience in SLC 500 and Logix 5000 series PLC’s and PanelView ME Studio
Programming.
• Knowledge of Kinetix Servo systems a plus.
• Have knowledge of EnetIP Networks and fault-finding diagnosis.
• Familiarity with Rockwell SE, and Historian a plus.
• Understanding of computer operating systems such as: Windows 10, Server 2019 and
Thin Clients etc. a plus.
• Review key plant metrics/KPIs and equipment data to identify potential areas for
continuous improvement then lead a team to develop an engineered solution
• Provide electrical troubleshooting and industrial controls support to the maintenance
department.
• Manage Rockwell Automation and other software/hardware and programs on department
computers as well as ensuring all control devices are up to date with firmware and
software revisions knowledge of Asset Center a plus.
• Maintain a library for all control device back-ups and updates.
• Work closely with operations management to provide effective controls support.
• Ensure equipment in area is maintained, guarded and operated in accordance with defined
safety regulations and procedures.
• Identify potential cost savings and cost avoidance; implement continuous improvement
projects to achieve results.
• Opportunity to Mentor, Develop, Train and Validate knowledge of electrical
troubleshooting and controls systems with all Mechanics.

lumber mill environment.
Education and Work History:
• Technical degree in a related field, AAM graduation, or equivalent experience.
• Two, or more years’ experience in the Automation field.
• Strong experience with the following software packages
o Rockwell Controls Software
o Microsoft Office
• Strong overall electrical knowledge and experience with electrical and industrial control
systems.
• Excellent communication skills and effective team building skills a must.
• Experience in a lumber mill a plus.
