Proposed redistricting map could
change Pike, Lamar, Upson's district
BY RACHEL McDANIEL

Members of the
Georgia House of Rep
resentatives - including
Pike County resident and
District 131 Rep. Beth
Camp - worked to create
a new redistricting map
recently based on 2020
Census data. Lawmak
ers must reconstruct
the maps every 10 years
and last year’s census
showed Georgia’s popu
lation grew by 1 million
people from 2010 to 2020.
There must be 59,511
residents in each House
district. The proposed
redistricting map would
change all of Pike and
Upson County and part
of Lamar to District 135
instead of 131.
“Georgia is growing
in population primar
ily in the Atlanta area.
The shift in the map
we approved reflects a
shrinking south Georgia
and a growing metro
area. 1 am very thankful
that my case for Pike,
Upson and Lamar being
communities of interests
was reflected in the new
House District 135,” said
Rep. Camp.
The proposed map
would change District 131
- which currently includes
Pike - to District 135.
Lawmakers set Thanks
giving as the deadline to
complete the maps under
the direction of Gov. Brian
Kemp. The proposed map
has been approved by the
Senate and House and now
must be sent to the gov
ernor for approval. Beth
Camp was on the commit
tee to notify the Gover
nor that the House had
convened in accordance to
the Proclamation.
The special session for
redistricting started Nov.
3 and the Reapportion
ment Committee worked
on redistricting cities,
school boards, coun
ties, both bodies of the
Georgia General Assem
bly and the U.S. Congres
sional seats to determine
their districts for the
next decade.
An Associated Press
analysis stated that at
least one state Senate
district and as many as
four House districts may
have to shift out of mid
dle and south Georgia.
Northwest Georgia
also could lose a House
district. Eliminating black
Democrats could invite
lawsuits, and there’s
only one white Democrat
remaining in the General
Assembly.
A county had to grow
by more than 10% just to
keep up with Georgia’s
overall growth, but cit
ies and suburbs gained
people while 53 of the
71 smallest counties lost
population.

HARVEST: To be shared with community in time for Thanksgiving
FROM PAGE ONE
This is the second
year the Nalls have
opened their garden to
help families right before
Thanksgiving. This year
he hopes to give out
some of the many items
he has canned to some
families in need. This is
their third year having a
garden and Mark plants
a spring and fall garden
and uses his harvest to
can items such as relish,
peas, salsa, beans, jellies
and jams.
“You meet a lot of
interesting people and
sometimes new neigh
bors,” said Mary who
usually helps harvest
and then cook - or can
and preserve - Mark’s
bounty. “Sometimes 1
pick for older ladies who
can’t get out and pick.
One lady told me she
wants a mess of turnips
and a mess of collards
and 1 told her I’d have it
ready for her.”
Mark was recently
re-elected as Zebulon
council member for the
District 2, Post 2 seat
and likes to give back to
the community through
membership in the Shri-
ner’s and Mason organi
zations.
“If 1 see something out
of place or see a need,
I just want to fix it,” he
said. “1 didn’t always
have everything 1 needed
growing up and I’ve
always wanted to help
other folks in need. I feel
blessed when I’m able to
help someone else and 1
would never put anyone
down for being in need.”
