Pirates, Lady Pirates teams earned
region championship titles
The Pirates baseball team as well as both the boys and girls soccer teams won the region cham
pionship title for Pike County High School. The Pirates baseball team remained undefeated in region
play and won the 2-AAA region championship over Mary Persons by a score of 8-1. They hosted
the first round of the GHSA State Tournament with a double header against Savannah High School.
The Pirates soccer team was ranked third in the state after winning the region championship and
advanced to the Sweet 16 level of state playoffs. The girls were ranked at ninth in the state and also
advanced to the Final Four in the playoffs. The softball Lady Pirates were the 2-AAA Region Champi
ons after finishing the regular season 17-4 overall and 13-1 in the region. They made it to the Final 4.

Spalding County teen
died at local business
A 14-year-old teen died at Middle Georgia Water
Systems in Zebulon after a vehicle fell on him. Au
thorities said the teen and two others - including a
12-year-old and another 14-year-old - were inside a
garage bay at the time of the incident. One of the
surviving boys was from Pike County and the other
was from Spalding County. The teen was transported
by ambulance but was pronounced dead at the hos
pital. According to initial reports, the juveniles were
inside the business taking parts from vehicles and the
surviving two were charged with burglary, criminal
damage to property, entering auto and reckless con
duct. It was later revealed that the boys used a chain
to hoist the bumper of a truck. The bumper gave way
and fell on the teen, fatally wounding him.

honored as Golden Eagle

Eagle dinner honored Concord mayor
John Strickland and Larry Stover. The
dinner is hosted by the Boy Scouts
of America Flint River Council and
presented by The Associates Group
Insurance and Kiwanis Club of Griffin. JOHN STRICKLAND
Theater teacher earned
High Five praise
Pike County High School teacher Lori Bush was
nominated - more than once - for the High Five for
Teachers award and voted on by citizens across Geor
gia. She has taught for six years, sharing her lifelong
passion for theater with Pike middle and high school
students. Paul Milliken of Good Day Atlanta noted
that there were nearly a dozen nominations for Lori
and she has helped many students earn top honors in
One Act Play and literary competitions at PCHS.

Gymnastics state champ
earned perfect 10.0
Madelynn Crow and the Pike County High School
gymnastics team made school history as she became
the first athlete to earn three state championship
titles. She earned an incredible 10.0 for her floor rou
tine and set another record for the team. The team
ended up placing 11th out of 29 teams even though
out-ranked by teams that were much larger.
Sonja Morton earns
Saints in Light award
Prayer Power of Georgia honored Sonja Morton as
the Saints in Light Award winner at the Pike com
mission meeting. Ben Maxedon of
Prayer Power of Georgia said Sonja
works with and has worked with
many organizations in Pike County
to help others and the community
over the years. She has helped the
homeless and people in need and
cooked countless meals for those
in need. She has helped with her
church and helped in the Lion’s
Club. She was once Lion of the Year
with Lion’s Club International for
her service. Chaplain Maxedon
described Sonja as the kind of person who works
behind the scenes to get things done.
