State wide, there were 743 confirmed cases of COVID over the past two weeks and eight deaths. CORRECTION: Jenkins voted against the budget, not insurance Commissioner James Jenkins did not vote in opposition to the insurance plan adopted at the May 30 meeting but he did vote in opposition to the county’s budget after he questioned whether or not citi zens would see a tax increase. Celebrate Juneteenth on square June 17 A Juneteenth celebration will be hosted on the courthouse square Saturday, June 17 by Concerned Citizens for Pike and supported by the Pike County Branch NAACP Unit 5228. The Juneteenth program will start at 1 p.m. and will feature the Rev. Terrence Curtis as speaker. He is pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Jonesboro and Barnesville. “We look forward to celebrat ing this event with you, your family and friends,” said Patricia Beckham of the Pike County NAACP. “The program is slated to be a memorable occasion for the citizens of Pike County and surrounding areas. Please bring a chair because seating will be limited.” The event will include a variety of vendors who will start setting up at 11 a.m. on the courthouse lawn. This year’s event is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 14 at the Post 197 facility in Zebulon. Used and worn American flags may be placed in a drop box outside the Post 197 facility on Old Meansville Road. Scouts honor Old Glory with special ceremony Celebrate Flag Day Wednesday, June 14 with a Flag Day and Flag Retirement Program that will be hosted by Boy Scouts of America Troop 465 at the Pike County American Legion Post 197 fire pit area at 6:30 p.m. “It is estimated that there are more than 500 flags to retire,” said Bryan Richardson of Post 197. “There are flag drop off boxes in Williamson (contact City Hall) and at the Pike County Ameri can Legion Post 197 at 645 Meansville Street, Zebulon. Or bring your flag to the Flag Day and Flag Retirement event.” The flag drop box is available year round at the Post 197 building in Zebulon. Students get free lunches Old Mount Calvary Outreach center in Con cord will provide meals for all kids 18 and under each Saturday through July 22. The meals will be of fered from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the event will include fun activities and healthy, free meals. The outreach center is at 408 Sec ond Street. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally funded, state-administered pro gram that reimburses providers who serve free, nutritious meals and snacks to children and teens in low-income areas when school is not in session. Summer Reading programs in full swing at library The J. Joel Edwards Public Library offers a full schedule of pro gramming for all ages over the summer, includ ing teens on Mondays, preschool story time on Tuesdays, Make and Take Crafts on Wednes days, Toddler Time on Thursdays, school-age children’s programs and adult events on Thurs day evenings. Dave Holland of Atlanta’s Beatin’ Path Rhythm kicked the li brary’s summer reading program off in style on Saturday, June 3. Dave is a dynamic performer, teaching artist, and interactive rhythm facilitator. As founder of Beatin’ Path Rhythm Events and Interactive Rhythm, Dave promotes community, teamwork and diversity through rhythm based events. Dave concluded his program with a read ing of his new book, The Llama Who Rocks in Her Polka Dot Socks and provided the library with two complimentary copies. The library’s team includes manager Rosemary Bunn, as sistant manager Helen Carter, youth services Rieka Burke, Alla Drake and Cami Hoopes.
