Health department offers free flu, COVID vaccines
The Pike County Health
Department offers flu shots
and the updated COV1D-19
vaccine to provide protec
tion against two of the three
respiratory illnesses already
circulating this season.
Visit district4health.
org/make-an-appointment
to schedule your visit and
learn more about which
COV1D-19 vaccine brand the
health department currently
offers for your age group.
Citizens who wish to can
schedule both vaccines for
the same visit. You also may
call 800-847-4262 to make
an appointment. The health
department is located at 541
Griffin St. in Zebulon.
Recommended by the
CDC for individuals 6
months of age and older, CO
VID and influenza vaccines
are covered by many insur
ance plans at no cost to the
patient. For adults without
health insurance coverage,
a federal program will cover
the cost of the COVID vac
cine and administration fee.
There is a $21.93 adminis
tration fee for the influenza
vaccine for those who do
not have insurance or are
underinsured. Vaccines
For Children (VFC)-funded
COVID and influenza vac
cines are available for those
6 months old to 18 years old
without health insurance
coverage. Unless covered by
Medicaid, there is a $21.93
administration fee for those
who receive the VFC-funded
vaccine.
District 4 health officials
also encourage eligible older
adults and pregnant women
to talk with their primary
doctor about getting the
new FDA-approved RSV vac
cine, which is available at
select doctors’ offices and
local pharmacies.
It is important to get
your vaccines as soon as
possible to protect yourself
and loved ones and to help
prevent the spread of the
viruses, especially before
the holidays.
Flu and COVID vaccines
cannot completely prevent
someone from getting either
virus.
However, CDC data show
vaccines are the key - espe
cially for older adults and
individuals with chronic
health conditions - in reduc
ing the risk of severe illness,
long-term effects, hospital
ization, and death.
Vaccination is particularly
important for those at high
risk of complications if they
get sick, including adults 65
and older, children younger
than 5, pregnant women,
people with weakened im
mune systems, and people
with chronic health condi
tions such as asthma, diabe
tes, and heart disease.
Testing for COV1D-19 and
flu Individuals can pick up a
free COV1D-19 rapid self-test
in the front lobby of the
health department as sup
plies remain available.
The Pike County Health
Department also offers CO-
V1D-19 PCR testing and rapid
testing on Fridays from 9 to
11 a.m. For an appointment,

At right, the
late Rev. Robert
Hodo and his
wife Gwendolyn.
He served as
pastor at Mt.
Hope Baptist
Church for 52
years.
REV. HODO: Dies on
Nov. 21 after 52 years at
Mt. Hope Baptist Church
FROM PAGE ONE
She noted that there
are many members who
have only ever known
Rev. Hodo as their pastor
since he had been at the
church for so long. He
passed Nov. 21 and his
funeral was Nov. 28.
“His last sermon was
the third Sunday in
October. His health had
been declining as far
as mobility. He was to
preach the first Sunday
but he wasn’t feeling well
and later that evening
went to the hospital and
he did not make it back
home. He was in the
hospital for two weeks,”
she said. “It has taken a
toll on all of us and we
are in the process of get
ting a plaque made in his
memory.”
Pastor Hodo was
licensed to preach Feb.
28, 1963 at age 24 at Mt.
Zion Baptist Church in
Thomaston under the
pastorate of the late
Benjamin Lockhart and
ordained to preach July
16, 1966 at Shady Grove
Baptist Church under the
pastorate of the late Rev.
C.H. Atwaters.
In all his years of
preaching, he only
missed a couple Sunday
services.
“1 was called here to
Mt. Hope in February
1972.1 was 33 years old
when 1 came here,” he
said in a previous inter
view with the Journal
Reporter. “1 can best
describe my calling to
preach as a thirst or a
hunger. In all my years of
being here, it has truly
been rewarding as well
as challenging.”
