Home talent certainly scored a great success at the opera house last Monday night. T» begin with, the audience was i fair one in number*, thoroughly iu ympathy with its entertainers, and ready to have a good time whether the curtain was up or down. This feeling of comrade-ship made the <»ccasion ap pear like a delightful social gathering of frientls. and commend* this species of entertainment to our people. To mention each participant who did well in his or her part would take a double column, so creditable was the entertainment in every detail. The tableaux were delightful, and re flected the greatest credit on the taste ami management of Mrs. H. A. Bennett. Mnt. Furlong and Mr. O. D’Auvergne. The picnic was an ideal one, and the country school excruciatingly realistic. The interrupted courtship was finely done; and tbejhead* of Bluebeard's un fortunately curious^ wives *were l*»th beautiful ami horrible. The tableax were all well conceived and put on the board* ^without a single contre Iriitj#. The music, in charge of Mrs. C. W Lyuu, wa* an indispensable_ part of the evening’s enjoyment, Mrs. Lyon’s ac companiments to the tableaux adding greatly to their happy effect. Nearly all our favorite singers con tributed their taleut, Mrs. F. C. Owens, Mrs. D. Walker, Mr. Toomer, Miss Clara Lyon ami Miss Olive Butler-—all being at their best. Capt. Somerville, in Highland costume, sang "The March of the Cameron Men,” and it was one of the most taking things of the evening. The costume is beau tiful, and came from the “Banks of Allan Water,” the Captain’s birthplace we understand. The “Box of Monkeys” has become a part of Waycross history in bringing to light exceptional home talent and prov ing that Waycross |x*ople eau do any thing go si aud clever that they turn their hands ami minds to. Mrs. Love :ls Mrs. Ondcgo Jones, the much tried chaperon of her wilful but irresistible niece, was the perfection of prudence, dignity and graciou- Miss Clara Lyon, as the carefully reared English girl, broke through the restraints of a too prim training into a lovely mixture of art, artlessness and na tive love of fun and frolic. •. ^ Mr. E. H. Myers, in the difficult po sition of a well raised young man mis taken for a butler, interpreted his part with great good taste and ease, showing himself no tyro in the business. Mr. Ward AU*ertsoifpleased his friends by the hearty,*life-like mauner in which he acted out the agonies-of a bashful young man making'ijove to his chosen Miss Olive Butler won all hearts by her delicious characterization of the Western girl in her merry mood*, her unconventional ways and her alw-ays good-heartedness. She haa been the re cipient of so many compliments already tliatVe forliear saying more. The ladies as they appeared in the second act in handsome evening dresses made a pretty picture indeed, and that these "fair ladies and brave men” were our own people wanned the hearts of the audience to them, and the curtain fell with well earned success on one side, pleased approval on the other. The proceeds, after paying the m sary expenses, amounted to seventy-five dollars, which was turned over t Treasurer of the School Board.
