would not get if they worked well in the

the negroes, l>r. Itrown was the first
Southern man to deny that negroes

civilized and Christianized by the time
of emancipation. Dr. Hawthorne as
serted that the Southern white people

dogs and the devil showed him to be

that the State of Georgia was doing more
for the education of the negroes than
for the educatiou of the white people.
He called on Governor Northen, who
was present on the platform, to state how
much tax the whites and blacks paid.
The Governor said that the total tax
able property was $444,fHM»,000, and of
this the negroes paid taxes on 914,000,-

A furlon* Case.
Rev. Mr. Allison preached
county, near 5*tatcsboro, on Sunday. He
gives a remarkable account, illustrating
the personal peculiarities “of people.
Aliout twenty-seven years ago Garrett
Williams, a respected citizen of that sec
tion, and u soldier in the Confederate
army, returned from the war, and con
ceived the idea <*f being buried in a way
that was decidedly at variance with the
established custom. Jn a lovely spot on
1-liill, amid an oak thicket, away
from the traveled road, he selected a
spot and had four lightwood posts atttu
the ground and extending about seven
feet from the surface. On this he had
constructed a substantial house of tongue
i) grooved lumber, about fire feet wide,
eight feet long and four feet high, with
a door at one end. There ho desired his
remain* placed at hi* death and hb wish
is complied with.
Mr. Allison, ^with a friend, drove out
to the spot on Monday, opened the door
and viewed the remain*, simply the
skeleton with the decayed clothing, the
top of the coffin having Iwcn removed at
previous date. On the inside of
the door was written in pencil, "Trust *
mediator lietween the Sunday school
and the church.
"The church deiuautl* an Americanized .
franchise a* well a* a naturalized Iran- j
chise," said the bishop. “The coutin- »
• uation of foreign languages and customs ;
Bulloch I * n ^is country is wrong, and we are op
posed to the teaching of foreign langua
ge* in our schools. We believe that the
elective franchise should be more guarded
and that foreigners should be required to
serve a longer apprenticeship to secure it.
We regard the legislation iu congress
to exclude Chinese as iuhuman. The
centralization of wealth is denounced,
and the declaration is made that if it is
not arrrsted there will be danger to the
social and state functions. Total ab
stinence is imperitive and complete state
prohibition is urgent.
