The straight-out, unterri fied, simon-pure democrat* are on the alert and watching carefully every move ment of the third party. They are at work and are determined that democracy shall Is- triumphant in rKl Charlton and will give the third or republican party scarcely any show at all. At Folkston, a* well as other point* in the county, they have organize*! a lively democratic club. It meets every Friday night and is well attended by men who are deter mined to uphold the banner of demo cracy. The will bring out men for all the office* from representative to coro ner, and will never give over till they are every one elected. Owen Gibson is spoken of for repre sentative and as lie is very popular all over the county, it i* likely he will he selected. Other* are also mentioned, hut his chances seem to lie best. O. R. I/oigli, of Folkston, will 1** urged for ordinary of the county, and he will make a good one. No truer man lives in Charlton than Bay lA-igh. The third party will likely select as their candidate for the legislature either .S. F. .Mills or John Vickery, The third party vote i* said to be pretty light and the democrats fear little trouble from them, hut they propose that no grass shall grow' under their feet. Th» Rustic Hits Hack at th* llumoroosiy- Incllaed Chief. Functionaries in public offices in great cities, who do not always have work enough to keep th m out of mis chief, sometimes conspire to play a joke upon some person from the country who comes in on business; and it is cheerful to learn that occasionally they get more than they bargain for, as The common saying is, from these same “simple-minded" country people. Dur ing the recent excitement over dyna mite explosions in Paris, when anar chists were causing disasters under the very noses of the police and many were escaping detection, a policeman one- day found upon the street a pocket book containing thirty thousand francs. lie took it to the central police office and gave It to bis chief, who examined and made a note of its contents. A few minutes later a rich farmer from Normandy arrived at the office, and declared that he had lost a pocket- book containing thirty thousand .francs, lie described the contents of the pocket- book with so much detail that the uperintendent of the office was satis fied that the pocketbook already iu the office belonged to the former. This a* indeed the case. The superintendent, noting the coun trified air of the applicant, resolved to amuse himself at his expense. Calling clerk, who had overheard tbe conver sation, he said to him, impressively: '•I give you just five minutes to go upon the streets and find this man’s pocketbook. If you do not come back with it in that time I shall discharge you.” The clerk saw through the joke, and pretended to be terrified. He pleaded for mercy with clasped hands, and put on such an air of dismay that the farmer interceded for him and begged the chief not to require an impossibility of the man. But the chief was inexorable. He sent the clerk out whining and trem- ttng. At the end of three minutes the clerk rushed in, apparently out of breath, and threw down the pocketbook, which he had simply picked up in the next For a moment the farmer was stupe fied. Then he put the pocketbook in his pocket, and remarked, as ho went “Well, well! If you fellows could find dynamiters haif as easily as you can pocketbook*. it would be a great benefit to the public!"—Yonth’s Com panion. —“Do you know the value of an oath?" asked the judge of an old darky who was to be the next witness. “Yes, sah, I does.
