For in this the range of types, grade* and prices are wider than any other crop, while the seed affects and oontrolb all these more than any other factor. Soil, climate and ' management, operate to determine the character of the product The variety must be anted to the type which the planter intends to raise, and the soil must be adopted to the type, or failure la certain. Bright yellow tobacco can not be produced on dark rich soil, nor rich dark shipping on poor gray soil; nor will the rich, coarse rarieties pro- dace fiae, silky yellow goods, or the thfa silky rarieties make heavy, fat, tough export tobacco. There has been a wonderful improvement in varieties of tohaeoos dnriag the past generation, im provement by selection in the old kinds and the introduction of new varieties, with superior qualities characteristic for •very type of tobacco. None hot an old fogy will continue to plant old, unim proved varieties, because they wi father's or grandfather's favorite*. The world move*, seed* are improved, and in dnstriea developed and advanced. Our ancestors succeeded with the varieties of tobacco they planted when there was maialy but one type—the dark shipping —but taste and fashion change. New types are wanted and new varieties suit ed to these type*, and planter* who meet the demand are those who make the most money by tobacco planting. Where I* the successful former who now sow* the old varieties of wheat once used by hi* ancestor*? Look at the improve ment* in varieties in vegetable*, fruits* form and horticultural, in the past cen tury. Heeds, like animals, are greatly improved by propagation of selections and judicious crossing, and especially is this true as regards the improvement of seeds, when carried on under the most favoring conditions of development as to ■oil, climate and cultivation. Virginia and North Carolina are the homes of the tobacco plant, and here It develops to the highest perfection, and consequently here have originated the bent and finest varieties. They now grow all the types Used in plug tobacco and for pipes, cigar ettes and cigars profusely. Planters have no excuse for inferior seeds when pedigree seeds of types may be so cheaply procured from It, L. Itagland, Hyco, Halsfox county, Va., the well known tobacco seed pioneer, where you will gal pure, and fresh seed true to name. We all premise by stating that only an approximate guide may be given fir the selection of varieties suited to the several type*. The variation in soil and climate in different localities greatly modifies the selection, for what is best in some localities is not best In other*; and trial at last must determine what is beat in every case.
