What is a Baby?
A London (taper offered a valuable
prize for the best definition of a baby
and received a long list of good ones.
That which took the prize was “a tiny
feather from the wing of love, dropped
into the sacred lap of motherhood.”
Among the best were the following :
A troublesome compendium of great
jtos-ibilities.
The only precious possession that
never excites envy.
A bold asserter of the rights of free
Hjteccli.
A thing everybody thinks there is a
great deal too much fuss about, unless
it is their own.
A thing that we are expected to kiss
and look as if we enjoyed it.
The one thine needful to male a home I popularity purely on their merits.

Regarding Hood’s Sarsaparilla, ask the
people who take this medicine, or read
the testimonials often published in this
paper. They will certainly convince
you that Hood’s Sarsaparilla possesses
unequalled merit, and that HOOD’S
CURES.

We desire to say to our citizens, that
for years we have been selling Dr. King’s
new discovery for consumption, Dr.
King’s New Life Pills, Bucklen’s Arnica
Salve and Electric Bitters, and have
never bandied remedies that sell as well,
or that have given such universal satis
faction. We do not hesitate to guaran
tee them every time, and we stand
ready to refund the purchase price, if
satisfactory results do not follow their
use. These remedies have won their
labor.
The pulp from which the leaves of
life’s book are made.
A padlock on the chain of love.
A soft bundle of love and trouble
which we cannot do without.
The morning eawler, noonday crawler,

The magic spell by which the gods
transform a house into a home.
A diminutive specimen of perverse
humanity, that could scarcely be endured
if he belonged to some one else, but, be
ing ours, is a never-failing treasury of
delight.
A mite oi humanity that will cry no
harder if a pin is stuck into him than
he will if the cat won’t let him pull her

which every couple think they possess

That which increases the mother’s
toil, decreases the father’s cash, and
serves as an alarm clock for the neigh
bors.
A pleasure to two, a nuisance to every
other body and a necessity to the world.
One of timham’s Jokes,
This story about Walter Q. Gresham,
is told by an old Indianian. Sitting in
his office one day were Senator Voorhees,
W. W. Dudley and some other friends.
They were discussing politics when
Judge Gresham arose and said: “.Suppose
we go down and have a drink. You’ll
go wont you, Dan ?”
Mr. Voorhees signified his assent. So
did the others in their turn until Dudley
was reached. He declined. “I never
drink” be said.
“Weil, come down and have a cigar,”
said Judge Gresham.
“Taank you, I never smoke,” said
General Dudley.
“Well, Dudley,” said Judge Gresham,
“you have all the qualities that go to
make a bad roan.”—Pittsburge Dispatch
BrtKht Spring Days.
The spring should be pre-eminently a
season of contentment, happiness and
hope. In these bright and pleasant
months the country should enjoy its
highest degree of tranquility and pros
perity. But spring, it Is well known, is
often a period of discomfort and dis
turbance in the physical system. Im
portant organs of the body become tor
pid or irregular in their action, and the
fact is instantly reflected in the mental
condition of the individual. A disorder
ed liver means disordered nerves and a
dull and unsteady brain. Anything
which will bring 'the physical system
into harmony with budding Nature con
fers an enormous benefit upon the na
tion, besides the mere allaying of physi
cal discomfort.' Hood’s Sarsaparilla
does this, as thousands of grateful men
and wemeu can testify, and increased
use of this standard spring medicine is
oi more real practical importance in pro
moting health and quiet in the business
world than reams of abstract theorizing.
In almost every neighborhood through

A Perfect Cure bp HOOD’S.
“About 38 years ago I got overheated
while at work in the harvest field, and was
sick abed for three months. When I got
on my feet again I found that I had a bad
kidney trouble and chronic diarrhoea,
which lias drawn on me for over 35 years.
Just Think of My Misery.
I dared not eat anything more than would
barely keep me alive. For years I felt that
my stay on earth would be short. I have
times without number been in such distress
ful pain and aching that I could not turn my
self in bed, and I would have to ask my
Hood’s a Cures
wife to take hold of my hands and turn
me. In all these yean I employed the best
physicians but nothing gave me permanent
relief. I had an iron constitution, or I
could not have stood the drain upon me.
“In the fall of 18S71 was bo weak I could
not work. I concluded I would try Hood’s
Sarsaparilla. To my surprise and great
joy I soon found that It was doing me good
and when I had used 7 bottles I was per
fectly cured. It is now 4 years and the
Cur© was Perfect and Permanent.
“For the past four years I have enjoyed
life and felt better and younger than in any
of the 35 years preceding. I endured every
thing a human being could and live, and
I will recommend Hood’s Sarsaparilla long
as I live. ’ ’ Wii. Osborn, Gibson City, Ill.
