THE WAYCROSS HERALD, SATURDAY, JULY 8, 1893. %RQiec9aa SATURDAY, JULY 8,1893. OUR OWX AFFAIRS. Wears, Note* and Goalp, In and Oat of Town, Pointedly Pat Purposely for! Our Readers. '- f The fourth of July bombardment b over and Way crow b still on top. The shipment of pear* from thb depot continues unabated. The longest day of the year has pa.«sed. but the days still seem mighty lengthy. The times will surely grow better, but the weather cannot grow much warmer. There is always something to* be thankful for. No drunkness i(i the city yesterday. The people were too full Of patriotism to take on much whiskey. In fact we don’t know that there was any red eye in the city. Mrs. C. T. Beaver* and children, who have been spending some time in Augusta. Ga.. have returned to their home in thecity. Mr. Beavers* has been having a very lonely time during his wife's absence. The fourth of July and the fire cracker are off for the present. Smiles chase away the wrinkles. I^et's all smile. _ 7Z Capt. Turner had many caller* during bis brief stay in the city. The *Waycross colony at St; Simons is assuming respectable proportions. A mean man generally persuades himself that ha |s only cautious. If, you have a little money in the bank don’t drew it out that you may blow it in. After the rein sunshine. That’s all right provided the sun don’t shine too hot. Call for .’Sweet Whisper" cigars when you want*a smoke. It is the best. ‘‘Slab’' and “Dab” are famishing some vety interesting "gab" for our readers. • Mr.. Chafer will jaove hb stock of hard ware to Tampa. , With' the advent of the hot weather the Way cross dude is crawling out of that girth. The early spring angler Is winding up his little ball of yams. * \ Mr. G. S. Turner, of Yarn, an enterprising business man. left an immense beet at the Herald office this morning. It is of the yellow variety and weighs 6£ pounds. It b reported that Mr. Tumor will come to Way- cross and go into the livery business. He has many friends here who would gladly welcome him. We loam that some of our young men have organized a brass band tor Waycross. If there is one thing more than another that Way cross needs itfa a brass band. It is a poor*hone that will hot move till a bundle of hay is held before hb nose. It b poor cikiseu that will not move in 4ny public enterprise unless he thinks hf.will receive quick returns for himself. A recent visitor to Blackshear says that ten thousand bushels of com will be raised in the corporate limits of that city. The prohibition issue in Blackshear seems to have given an impetus to com culture. The Herald will keep up its work for Way- cross at all times and under all circum stances. The weather never gets too hot too cold form to get in our oar for oar town. How about reciprocity? For every new subscriber the Herald will give a heat edition of Webster’s dictionary. Master Victor Wooten entertained a party of his little friends last Saturday on the occasion of his twelfth birth-day. The party was a very enjoyable one.. The longer the little folks live the older they becomi God bless them. - ***' *' The weather prophet who said we were to have no summer made a slight slip up The best way to make business good in your own town is to buy all you need at home. Ain’t yqu glad you have lived to see a other anniversary of Independence Day? The plastering on the Methodbt church has commenced. Perspiration b a good sign of circulation. Jit Is also a good sign of warm weather. The celebration of the fourth in Waycross was uproarious but it was solid and patriotic. The dollar of our daddies may be in db- grace, but we love it Just the same. The dog poisoner b again abroad in the land. Look out for your valuable pointers Mrs. Claude Allen, of Waycross, is spend ing sometime with friends at Live Oak. Fla., says the Banner. The derrick and machinery being put up by Mr. Finn at the new ajpesian well looks like doing something. If there is anything sweeter than the Waycross girl, the sugar trust ought to know about it.. Mr. Baldrich, father-in-law of Mr. Bartola Baum, and formerly of Quitman, but now of Florida, is vbiting in the city. Now is the time to put a silver lining in your clouds. You may never be able to do it so cheap anymore. A number of neat cottages have recently been erected at the works of theSatilla MTg. Co. If there was anything stronger than lem onade in Waycross on the fourth, the Her ald failed to catch on The manufacturing boom will strike Way- :ross os soon as money matters are a little The latest news from the Waycross colony at St. Simon’s is to the effect that they are having a glorious time. Mr. Quarterman reports a fig of the brown variety that measured eight and one six teenth of an inch in circumference. • It gives us pleasure to note the fact that . there are indications that Brunswick' will come around all right. The delicious melons sent us by friends on Sunday last went a long ways towards fill ing a long felt want. Several new houses axe going up in the north eastern portion of the city. Way cross keeps on agrowing. Frank L. Stanton’s tribute to the late Wu». H. Moore will be found in another column. It is beautiful and touching. If you are hot standing around in the shade, how do you suppose those fellows feel •on top of the Methodbt church steeple. If our northern friends think the South is lacking in patriotism, they ought to see us celebrate the fourth of July. Mr. Wolfe, who has been in charge of the business of the Southern Express Company at thb place for some time, and who b very, popular in thb community, left to-day for Gainesville. Fla., at which point he will take charge of the company’s office, wbh him success in hb new home. . Death of Mrs. Luvenia Lee. Only a day or two ago the Herald chronicled the death of Mrs. Sarah Baker, and now it has the sad duty of announc ing the death of one of her daughters, Mrs. Luvenia Lee, which occurred at the latter’s residence on corner of Thomas and Baker streets, in this city, Wednes day night, 5th inst. Mrs. Lee has been ill for some months and her death was apprehended. She was about thirty years of age, a member of. the Methodist church, and was a de vout Christian lady. She was preceded by her husband four years agp, and now leaves four little orphans to mourn the deatli of an only parent, but as God has promised to “temper the winds 1 to the shorn lamb," 30 he will care for the motherless and fatherless children. Mrs. Lee will be buried at Mills’ Church in Charlton county,,by-the side of her mother. The bereaved ones have the Herald’s tenderest sympathy. The Outlaw Died la Jail. Fresno, Cal., July 6.—Outlaw John Sontag died in jail. It gives us pleasure to note the improved condition of the Expres^Office, which has been repainted and reJuvinated inside and out. and presents a bright and cheerful ap pearance fully in keeping with the counte nances of the young men who hold forth there. Now if Wolfe and Brinson would only buy a new suit of clothes and have them shoes blacked, the thing would be complete.
