on The strip.
Sooner* Got All the Prize* and Hone*!
Seeker* Return In Dkgut.
Arkansas City, Kan., Sept. 20.—A
gale has swept through the Chtflbkee
strip, lifting great volumes of the black,
dry earth and tearing tents awa£4rom
their fastenings. Tented town* were
low by the wind tW«l little progress
le by the army of town builders,
of people have moved out of
land afianpmise. Many have lost the
they nl^gd for last Saturday, but
others, whe^had undisputed pos-
of farms, abandoned their claims
to their old homes, thorough!}*
disgusted with the country.
At Perry the “sooners” have full and
undisputed possession of the business
centers. Business men are being driven
to the town of Wharton, u mile below,
* where the railroad buildings are located
| in the center of the Indian allotments.
I*. The Cherokecs are almost giving away
r iots to those who will erect buildings.
and the railroad company is encouraging
l the abandonment of Perry in the interest
of Wharton. The line of claim takers
surrounding the land office rivals in num
bers the line that awaited their turns at
the registration booths before the open
ing.
Reports are to the effect tliat the
choice claims in the strip were taken by
“sooners.*’ Those who made the great
race honestly last Saturday found the
bottom lands all taken, and, in many
. instances, men were at work plowing
^ ground about houses half completed of
■ eod or boards. These “sooners’’ have
W profited by their Oklahoma experience.
¥ It will be impossible to convict them of
' perjury this time. They all will have
their witnesses on hand to swear each
other clear, and the man who had the
swift race horse will have no show be
cause none of his friends were with him.
Numerous prairie fires have beentho
cause of more deaths than sixsliooters,
and many charred bodies, on which
there was nothing to identify them were
found on the prairies.
Near Blackwell four quarter sections
were found in the possession of as many
“sooners” by trailers when they came in
on their foam-flecked horses. The
claims were valuable and the racers pro
i ceeded to drive th% “sooners" away. A
fight ensued in which three men wero
killed—Arthur Johnson, of Pueblo, Col.;
George.ChUds, of Valley Falls, S. D.,
and Jaxnes.Sqnires, of Hennessey, O. T.
—all “sooners.” .
A large mass meeting was held here
and resolutions adopted demanding the
surrender to the Civil Authorities of the
soldier who killed J. A*. Hill at the lino
of the ChilotJco reservation Saturday af
ternoon. The officers of the Third cav
alry persistently decline to "give thenamo
of the soldier who 'did the *’ shooting",
claiming that in killing Hill he was sim-
- ply obeying orders. The remains of the
dead xuan were this afternoon shipped to
^^his former home in New Jersey.
