Washington,* f-ept. 28. - President j Cleveland and Se cretary Lamont author ize the statement that they have no knowledge of the $50,000 campaign sub scription which Mr. James J. Van Alen is reported to have made to the Demo cratic campaign fund. As to the sub scription attempted to be raised to repay Mr. Van Alen, it is reported here that the money had all been pledged, but that Mr. Cleveland objected to the execution of the plan of repayment and that it was therefore abandoned. Neither the presi- j dent nor any of his advisers would dis cuss the story. Much pressure is being brought to bear upon the committee on foreign re lations to secure the indefinite pigeon holing of Van Alen’s nomination. The general disposition of the commit tee as now constituted, would bo to delay the reporting of the nomination indefi nitely but for the fact that until Van Alen’s nomination is formally rejected, President Cleveland will not send an other name to the senate, and the pres ent incumbent will continue to hold the office. It is doubtful if so unpopular an appointment was ever sent to the senate as Van, Alen’s, and the opposition to his confirmation is increasing daily. The policy of the senators who oppose confir mation will be to delay action long enough to give the president plenty of time to withdraw the name, and if not done, then to force rejection. ; S r.
