The Gloomy View.
Goldsmith's “Deserted Village” docs
not present a gloomy picture than that
of Brunswick to-day.
The central residence part of the city
is almost without an inhabitant. With
but here and there an exception the
stores arc closed, and cn many streets
von may walk the entire length, with
no sign of life appearing only that of an
occasional cat creeping stealthily from
place to p:acc .in search of food.
In other parts where residences are
occupiedAhere is a hushed silence as if
the dreary surrounding had crept into
the hearts of the people and crushed out
.all hope.
Here and there may he seen a brows
ing cow upon some meadow of green, a j
planted plat of God’s - Providence to light I
the way with beaming sunshine, and in ;
the midst of the waving moss drooping j
from the grand old oaks, one can look on
in admiration, catching’ the brighter blue
of.tlie over sky, and in breath j>f sweet
salt air, wonder why this plague would'
exist.
There is no stench of pollution, and
yet while thus dreaming the unaccount-*
able poison may* he slacking ’ the blood
to a torment of vicious pain and scorch
ing lever. *
But for the going and coming of the
few brave spirits whose time is devoted
to the sick and the ■ goffering, and the
daily throng that forms in double file
next to the commissary store the dreary
picture would have no back ground of
relief.
In the midst of this, however, the few
are given to smile and cheer of connte-
nancc that tells the force of will behind
it. Even in the hardest haunts of vice
there is the absence o’f revelry.

A Hindoo monk has created some
thing of a breeze in the Parliament of
Religions by declaring that tlie reason
why Christianity had not made more
progress in the east was that the mis
sionaries were themselves selfish, dis
obliging, and without tact. “Tell your
missionaries,” lie said, “to preach gen
tleness and mildness, and to practice
what they preach. Tell them to prcaclt
Christianity; but tell them not to teach
that in order to become a Christian it
is necessary to become carnivora.”

They Are In It.
Among the coaches, flat cars, box cars,
etc., that were stopped over at the quar
antine station last night was a freight
car containing two big black negroes.
When discovered they were asleep, but
were awakened and asked for their
health . certificates. Of course they
could not produce thefn being common
tramps and stealing a ride, so they were
locked in the car and told that they
would be sent back to Brunswick. They
made a terrible noise for awhile, kicking
the sides of the cars, yelling and cryin;
for “help!” “murder!” and “fire!” and
the lack. They did not like the idea of
being sent to Brunswick, neither d’d the
officers, propose to send them there, but
it-was a practical joke that worked well,
and this aftemonn when the car started
back towards Waycross the two negroes
were “in it”—rstil! crying for help.
