Carry your work to Jackson Crimes. He is a deserving man, a cripple soldier and the l»est shoemaker in Way cross. Ilaslncss in Waycross has Ik?oii steadily increasing for the past sixty days. The Herald has had a fmger in that pie certain. The weather 1ms Leon too warm for some people to go fo church, and now, pretty soon it will l*e lob cold, and that's the way If yon lind our columns short of local news to-day, attribute it to the fact that W. 8. Mayor Knight is equal to every emer gency. Yellow jack will be smart if any of his microbes reach this point. Send your children to scho.d. if you hav'nt the money to pay the tuition, notify the Herald and the matter will be arranged. poor This and That For The Herald By “Ilali.” I hope every man, woman and child in Waycros-s will take it upon them selves to make the concert for Brunswick a success: There, ought to l>c at least $150 to $200 in the house that night. Just immagine yourselves in thrir posi tion and then if you can still refuse to help, be it ever so little, then you are not deserving the name of man. But I think that the good people of Waycaoss ore sure to turn out en masse to help their suffering sister city-by-the-sea. Remember it is more blessed to give than receive. A famous Brooklyn clergyman was once addressing a Sunday school on the lesson of the day, which happened to be "Jacob’s Ladder.” He got along swim mingly until *i little urchin in one of the back seats squeaked out: “Why did the angels have to have a ladder when they had wings ?” After the ine vitable laugh had subsided the clergy man said “Well thatTis a fair question, who can answer it ? There was a pause, and then up went a pudgy fist. “Well, my little man,” asked the clergyman, “why was it?” ”"^1 guess they whs a moultin’,” was the astonishing reply, and the address concluded right there.” And now for those yaps who think they are doing a smart thing by sending items about yellow fever being in Way cross, to the different papers, they ought to be given a good coat of tar and leath ers and be ridden on a good sharp cor nered rail out .of town and told that if they show their noses around here again that they’ll get another coat of tar a great deal hotter than the last. I have no patience with such cattle. I, for one, would just enjoy the fun of giving them a good taste of cat-o’-nine-tails. An Irishman who had on a very rag ged coat was asked of what stuff it was made. “Bedad, I don’t know 1” said he; “but I think the most of it is made of fresh air.” * * I am glad to see that it is the gcjod in tention of our colored people to call a meeting to discuss means whereby they may bo able to atop those horrible lynch ing*. The remedy lies with themselves. I overheard a good old darkey’ say that “so long as us colored people mix so much together, good and bad alike, so long will white folks look down on us, we must divide the sheep from the goats and raise ourselves up out of the mire and let people see that we want to be good, quiet and peaceable citizens, then, and not ’till then, will the white folks cease to look down on us.” Dad. Mayor Knight and Snrgeon General Wyman. The following telegrams which ex plain themselves, passed between Mayor Knight and Surgeon Wyman to-day. Wa ycross, Ga., 10-4. •Surgeon General Wyman, Washington, D. C. Mrs. Bowers and two children refugees from Brunswick, passed here yesterday with a three day detention certificate, If you permit any more refugees to leave camp belore the ten days are up, I will j not honor any’ more of your Surgeons | certificates. As this is the only egress from camp it will inconvenience a great many people. Please put an inspector on between Waycrossand Jesup. A. M. Kxigat, Mayor. The following is the reply: Washington, D. G., 10-4. A. M. Knight, „ Way cross, Ga. Have wired detention camp for ex planation. Ten days will be insisted on. Trains not allrwed to stop at Jesup. Cordon drawn around Jesup. Carter leaves for Waycross to-day pending ar rival. Name and place an inspector be tween Waycross and Jesup. Forward bill for services. Wyman, Surgeon General. The Congressional Record )3 received daily at this office. There is lots of good reading in it and we are willing to divide with our friends. Charity is the greatest of all die Christian virtues. The good people of Waycross now have ample opportunely to show to what extent they possess it. If there is any one thing more than another that Wnycioss excels in. it is cleanliness. The next time Ware county has au dtc- tidn let the Democratic party make its nomi nations by primary. There seems to be too many eases and too few deaths for it all to be yellow fever. What do the other doctors say? Yesterday's election was very quiet and so far as we have heard there was no trouble or hard feeling engendered. Jf there is one thing that Mayor Knight understands more about than another, it i.< how to keep a strict quarantine. It is reported that the Peoples party and the Republicans were pretty well divided in the election for treasurer Tuesday. Capt. Crawley died of malarial fever. It ii possible that had he died elsewhere the '’ex perts 1 * would have called it yellow fever. If a quarantine inspector makes the slightest slip he will.be discharged just a? sure as you’ve got tliat pipe iti your mouth The prosperity and courtesy of the South ern people is proverbial, and in this respect . Waycross takes the lead of all Georgia towns. The time to plant out shade trees is not far distant. This important matter should not be neglected another season in Way- cross. The rumor that prevailed some time since to the effect that our opera house was un safe is entirely without foundation. It one of the most substantial buildings in the country and will be standing when all of us are gone.' Dr. Knott’* Treatment. Atlanta, October 4. (Special.)-—Dr. Knott returned from Washington this morning. He says Surgeon-General Wyman will at once give his new discov ery for the treatment of yellow fever a trial at Brunswick. Dr. Knott claims that yellow fever is the result of phos phoric acid poison, and says he can treat it successfully. Kettle Creek Items. Hr. C. E. Giddens was out in the woods searching for some beef cattle last Friday and killed a rattle snake that measured seven feet and lour inches in ength and had eleven rattles and . one button. Mr. Giddens said that it was the large it serpent that he ever saw in the woods. The farmers throughout this section are about done gathering their corn crop and report a fine harvest. The Turnip crop is about give out but the cabbage is coming in. Mr. D. J. Jeffords was very sick last Sunday but we are pleased to hear that he is better now. Mr. C. W. Tyre, of Warcsboro, was the guest of Mr. Jeffords last Sunday. Miss Evelin Davis, of Waresboro vis ited Miss Annie Jeffords last Sunday. Rev. Jack Thompson, of Bicbley, will preach at the Kettle Creek church next Sunday. October 2nd, 1803. Yellow Feyer Notes. No yellow fever at Waresboro. The fever was carried to Jelcvl'Island in a pile of bedding from Brunswick. It’s too late for Jesup to strengthen her quarantine against Brunswick now. Jesup is bottled up for the present, but we hope she may not suffer greatly. Dr. Branham says the appearance of yellow fever at Jesup is the result of bad inspection. Miss Casey, the only ease at the hos pital at the oamp of detention, is recov ering rapidly. Waresboro is all right. She is as dean as a new piu and as healthy as a free nigger in sugar boiling time. It is suggested that if Dr. Knott’s dis covery fails to cure yellow fever, he will not be alone. Yellow Jack is a knot ty subject. It turns out that the rumor of yellow fever at Waresboro is a fake. Dr. Spence reports that there is no case of fever of any kind in that town. Brunswick has never passed a more gloomy month since her city hood than that of September 1893, and her prayers are turned to a Kind Providence that another such one may not be realized. The year 1393 has been one that her people will never forget, But, already they are turning their hearts to the brighter future 'that shall follow the dark hours through which we are pass ing.—T-A- Mr. Pollard Sworn In. A Family of Colquitt County MjstI fled by a Strange Hud. Quitman, Ga., Sept. 29.—News has reached Quitman of the discovery by a Mr. Cooper, who lives near Hempstead in Colquitt county, just above Brooks county, of a girl baby a few hours old on his front veranda ( a few nights ago. The baby was in a basket, was richly dressed and accompanying it was a note telling Mr. Cooper and his wife that if they would take good care of the infant they would be handsomely compensated. The entire neighborhood is greatly mys tified as to where the young stranger came from. By order of City Council. This Sept SO, 1393. -R. P. Bird. Clerk of Council. The year 1893 will go down in his tory as a memorable one. Fifty Dollars or Sixty Days. A colored youth, named Sydney, got up quite a little stir yesterday by report ing that a colored man had yellow fever in the eastern portion of the city, investigation was made by Dr. Walker and his honor, the mayor, and the rumor was found to be entirely without founda tion. This morning the smart boy was tried before the Mayor and fined fifty dollars or sixty days on the gang. Per sona inclined to get up sensational mors can profit by the example. Mayor Knight will not tolerate this class of people. Mayor Kuight Makes an Inquiry and the Surgeon General Replies. His honor, Mayor Knight, wired Sur geon-General Wyman yesterday asking for the author of the rumor that neces sitated the sending of Surgeon DeSaus- surc to Waycross. This morning the following telegram was received, speaks for itself: Washington, D. C., Oct. 3. 1893. A. M. Knight Mayor, Waycross, Ga. Inspection necessary to remove un founded suspicion, other clean towns will be inspected also. Wyman, Surgeon General. Proclamation. On account of the prevalence of yel low fever in Jesup, and on St. Simon and Jekeyl Islands, a rigid quarantine is hereby declared against those places. No persons, baggage or freight will be permitted to enter the city of Waycross. The officers and employees oi the rail road companies and the citizens of Way- cross are requested to assist in enforcing this quarantine. A. M. Knight, Mayor. Mr. Thomas Batte, editor of the Graphic, Texarkana, Arkansas, has found what he believes to be the best remedy in existence for the flux. His experience is well worth remembering. He says: “Last summer I had a very severe attack of the flux. I tried al most every known remedy, none giving relief Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy was recommended to me. I purchased a bottle and re ceived almost immediate relief I con tinued to use the medicine and tirely cured. On a table was piled a portion of the assets of the bank in the shape of a bushel or two of silver dollars, halves, quarters, etc., peck or two of gold, in twenties,. tens and fives and a pile of greenbacks that would nearly fill a cotton basket. Mr. Wadley said that he had been taking stock and wanted-ns to see what the bank had left. The South Georgia Bank is certainly solid if cash is neces sary to make it so.
