Our city is remarkably dear of tramps

The report of the several cases of fever at
the camp of detention, turns out to be a

Notwithstanding the tight times the S. F*

and extensive business for Wayeross.
The soil of Ware county is admirably
adapted to the culture of tobacco, and it will

Death of Mr. W. F, Parker.
Mr. W. F. Parker died at his resi
dence in this city last night at about 8
o’clock. He had been in very bad
health for gome months past and his
death was not unexpected. Mr. Parker
was one of our oldest and most highly
respected citizens and his death is gen
erally regretted. He will be buried this
afternoon with Masonic honors from the
Episcopal church, -f proper and fitting
tribute to the memory of our departed
brother and fellow citizen will appear
later iq these columns.
Bather Indefinite.
The editor of the Josselyn and W r tjl-
thonville News published at Saxon, Ga.,’
announces that “hereafter the paper
may be a little political but if so it will
be for the right party, be that whatever
party it may.” The above paragraph
would indicate that the editor has lost
his bearings. He evidently don’t know
“where he is at.”
There are a few people in the world
have not visited Wayeross. Friend your
life is a failure until you come to the Magic
City.
Dr. Carter thinks the cool weather will
prevent the fever from spreading to any
great extent and thinks the danger
soon l>c over.
Our citizens all indorse the action of the
City Council in regard to Dr. Bruner.
The Doctor evidently thinks he is boss of
tho whole business.
All the leading brands of corsets can be
obtained of Brad Watson A Co.
Wayeross is now doing a arge jobbing
business. Country merchants.will find it
to their advantage to get prices here' before
ordering from other cities.
p . It is rumored that the new South Bound
R, R. is taking all the tramp travel to Flor
ida from the main line which passes through
the Magic City. The S. B. is welcome.
Mayor Knight is kept pretty busy issueing
health certificates. He might as well in
clude the whole community Hi one general
document. We are all healthy lierc and
hereabouts.
Remember, when you are in the eity that
you are expected to call at the Herald office
and leave your name and address and any
little loose change you Tuay have about
your clothes.
. The advent of the Christian Laymen's
Headlight, will give Wayeross six papers,
towit: one daily, two weeklies and three
monthlies. How is that for a town of only
seven or eight thousand people ?
In view of the -fact that Mr. Jackson
Grimes lias formerly announced his inten
tion of running Judge Sweat for Congress
it is now in order for the Judge to give us,
Iris views on the silver question.
The editor oftlie Brunswick Times-Adver

paper going in the midst of an epidemic.
We want tlie T-A. early and often, but
brother Wrench we want it fumigated.
The Herald invites communications from
its readers and patrons in Wayeross and

may be chosen by themselves, hut we insist
that they must be short and to the point.

Surgeon General Wyman - in Wayeross.
Snrgeon General Wyman arrived in
Wayeross at one o’clock to-day, and is '
accompanied by Surgeon Hutton. Sur
geon Wyman will leave for camp Haines
to-night He is here for the purpose of
giving the situation at Brunswick and
Jesup a thorough and personal investi
gation, though he will not visit those in
fected points ih propria persona.
Surgeon Wyman stated to a Herald
reporter that the disease at Brunswick
was singular on accDunt of the low rate
of mortality which had prevailed, and
when the suggestion was made that per
haps malarial fever was playing a con
spicuous part at the expense of yellow
jack the Surgeon General smiled and
said such a thing might be possible.
He was asked about Dr. Brunner’s
report in regard to* Way cross and stated
that Brunner had reported “some suspi
cious circumstances at Wayeross.”
The Surgeon General expressed him
self as highly pleased with the appear
ance of things in the 3Iagic City.
Surgeon General Wyman is a pleas

averse to talking to newspaper men.

The Business Season Has Opened Up
The business season is upon us and it
has opened up most auspiciously in the
Magic Oity. The number of our' busi
ness houses has increased and never be
fore in the history of the town have our,
merchants displayed such immense atocks
of fall and winter goods. The truth is
that for some time past Wayeross has
been reaching out for business. She
has advertised liberally and she has
made it a point to treat those who come
here to do business, in such a manner
as to insure their return. Wayeross
to-day is the best retail market -south of
Atlanta, and persons living within fifty
miles of the city will find it to their in
terest to hop on the train and come here
to buy their goods. The Herald is will
ing to guarantee that they will more
than save railroad fare by so doing*
Many of our merchants buy their goods
direct from the manufacturers and im
porters and, on account of low rents and
cheap living, they can duplicate any bill,
either at wholesale or retail, from any
city, A visit to the Magic city will con
vince you th it our statements are cor
rect Come to see us friends, you will
be received in a hostile manner and
have every attention.
The Crawley estate lias a nice dine of

A Big State.
You could dig a lake in the centre of
Texas, put the Republic of France on an
island in that lake and it couldn’t be
seen from the shore. You could hide
England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales
in any part of it, and it would be two
months before any one who didn’t know
of their location would be able to get
even a suspicion of it—Macon News.
The Storm in Sonth Florida.
Private advice from.the Indian river

has done immense damage in that section.

Stand By Your Colors.
If you profess to be a democrat stand .
square to your colors. The democratic
party is the party of the people and
good democrats should not stray from
the fold. There will be disputes and
wranglings and sometimes divisions, but
in the end our leaders will come together
on vital questions. Our enemies are
glorying in the dissensions that have
arisen in our ranks and are prophecying
disaster in the future. The discussions
that are going on now will be settled
we do not doubt, to the best interest of
the people an 1 the coilntry. Let us not
become restless and dissatisfied bat let
us bear with Congress and the president
and feel assured that order will come out
of chaos. Right and truth will triumph
in the end. The democratic party is
iridestrucitble, and democratic principles
will stand the test of th« ages to come.
Our family troubles will soon be over
and like a lion, the grand old party will
arise in its might and shaking the dew
from its mane, overcome all opposition.
Let us stick to the old ship. She has
borne us through many a hard fought
battle and she will bear us triumphantly
to victory in the end.* We maybe
sorely tried in the coming campaign,
bnt democrats must and will stand by
their colors.
If you are in wan* of a stove or heater
call on the Crawley estate, they, are of
fering big bargains in that line now in
orfc?r to close out their stock. lOtd&w
Madam Grundy Says
That a little paint and white wash is
badly needed in some sections of our

That the irecitations by Mrs. Reed and

The City Council Condemns Dr.Brtinner.
Whereas, We the council of the city
of Wayeross, having learned that Dr.
W. F. Brunner, health officer of the ci*y
of Savannah, had furnished such infor
mation to Surgeon General Wyman as
he deemed justified him -in sending an
inspector to Wayeross to investigate
such information relative to the location
of yellow fever here, and thereby placing
onr city at this critical juncture under
such survilance, as subjects us to great
( trouble and probably loss; and whereas
His honor Mayer Knight having request
ed Dr. Brunner to furnish.him with the
name or names of any such person or
persons so offending, ‘ so that justice
might be done, and he the said Dr.
Brunner having preeumptorily refused # so
to do. Therefore he it resolved by the
city council assembled, that we hold the
said Dr. \V. F. Brunner personally re
sponsible for circulating false rumors re
lative to the health of the city of Way-
cross, and that we do with indignation
condemn his efforts to govern the section
of the country outside of Savannah, and
demand that he shall confine himself to
those narrow limits.
By order of the city council.

Never was satire so true. The present
is indeed an age in which the love of
Mammon is predominant. The time was
when the ordinary man was considered
competent single handed to do battle
successfully in every avocation ot life.
That time is no more. Men have aban
doned the plodding, quiet and more
honest methods of acquiring riches.
They no longer rely upon individual
effort, but marshal their skill, and power
and influence under the names and trap
pings of corporations, pools and combi
nations, that their flight to wealth may
be moie rapid and certain. Like Midas
of old they want everything they touch
to turn to gold.
Since its first introduction, Electric
Bitters has gained rapidly in popular
favor, until now it is clearly in the lead
among pure medicinal tonics aud altera
tives—containing nothing which permits

recognized as the best and purest medi

let us try Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera

The following is from the Brunswick

The Herald had never doubted that Mr.

Brunswick.
NayorT, W. Lamb in an interview

member Congress this district, has done,
and is now doing for the stricken of
Brunswick, and by a private contribu
